This is such a minor issue, I hate to bring it up, but I will anyway.
I use a DVD-ROM drive to read my DVDs, and then my Sony 500A to burn.
Recently, my read time for DVDs has doubled ( a DVD that took 20 minutes to read now takes 40 minutes, etc). It took 25 minutes to read a movie that is only 61 minutes in length.
I unistalled recent software I had put in (Sonic MyDVD) but that did not help.
Any general ideas on what could have caused this, or are there just too many things that could have caused it?

When is the last time you defragged your harddrive?
Are your drives set to DMA?

You need to post more info about the problem. For instance, what OPSYS are you using?
I am not sure how it works for other Windows versions, but for XP-Pro, here is what COULD be happening (it has happened to me many times).
The DVD-ROM I use is running in Ultra DMA Mode2. If while trying to read a DVD, it incurrs reading errors, it automatically scales back to PIO Mode (much slower). Two problems now occur:
1. From this point forward, you will be stuck in PIO Mode. It does NOT automatically scale back up to DMA when read errors no longer occur ( a different "good" DVD).
2. Even though it has scaled back to PIO Mode, it will still report that it is operating in DMA Mode.
Again, for Windows XP-Pro, this is how you fix it:
go to
Start
Control panel
System
Hardware
Device manager
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Secondary IDE channel (if this is where your DVD-ROM resides)
Advanced settings
Here is where you can see the present mode settings (although as I said before they could be erroneous). Look at Current transfer Mode for Device 0 and/or 1 (depending on your configuration).
Now here is how to reset it:
When you select the Secondary IDE channel, select the tab "Drive". Then select "uninstall". Then close all the windows and restart the computer. Windows, upon restart, will reinstall the IDE driver and set it to DMA. You will then find that your ripping speed is back to normal.

Win XP USB 2.0 External DVD Writer Issues
For everyone with an external DVD writer (I have been having 4X writing issues with a Sony DRU-500AX in an external USB 2.0 enclosure)Microsoft just released a new USB 2.0 driver for Windows XP that resolved all my issues. I now have no writing issues writing at 4X to any media - Gold Top General 4x, Ritek, Princo, or any others.
See Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 822603 and download the update if you are having problems.

When can we expect the next update to Platinum? It seems there is to many problems with Platinum to have gone this far without a new version. I know by now most customers must have received their Platinum CD by mail. And are anxious for an update to these existing problems? So, any news on a Update????

Finally got it to work, whew!!! Forum member, almost, confirmed for me (thanks) that I needed to disable my Plextor CD-RW thru the Device Manager. I re-installed prior to that in safe mode and deleted the second gear engine. Let in old DXCS and DXC. The xpress problem of not seeing the new disk to burn too- button stayed greyed out- now worked. Tried a copy with the advanced-with compression- worked also. Used Verbatim 2.4x +RW's. I'll experiment more when I have time with other media. It played on my Sony player- the 'ultimate' test! ;) Thanks to everyone who got me this far- looking forward to the next version. Thanks again- igortwo
Windows 2000 Pro/SP4/Sony DRU-500A internal latest firmware/ using an ancient modified Gateway with an old PIII 1 gig/512 memory. I set the temp folders on my second drive- 5th partition. Hope that helps.

Chips144-
Thanks for the PEARL regarding changing DMA back to Ultra DMA2 from PIO.
I had updated my Sony 510A drivers after initial problems with Platinum. Sony instructs you to change DMA to PIO for the update! They did not say anything about reverting after that. Anyhow, I changed back to DMA without the uninstall step you suggested. My reads (when I can get them with Platinum!) were also longer then with Gold. I looked at my IDE properties, and although the drive was set to DMA, the transfer rate was PIO. Doing the uninstall did the trick.
I am adding this for others who may have followed the instructions from Sony on updating their burner's drivers.

Champman, If you forgot to turn off Norton anti virus that could have been the problem with the loss of 3 gigs. Same happened to me. I don't know about the rest, sorry

DVDXCopy, Plat and XPress read the DVD and process the data at the same time. The resulting data is written to a temporary file. If during this process, you abort by any means and for any reason, that temporary file remains on your hard drive. Depending upon how far into the operation you are when the abort occurs, that temporary file could be anywhere from 0 bytes up to 4.39Gb.
The next time you use the program, that file will be overwritten by the new data. If the process is allowed to complete (the output disc is written and closed), the program will then "clean itself" by removing that temp file.
The next time this occurs (loss of hard disc space), look at the default directory where DVDX... puts the file. See if there is a folder that is approximately the same size as the lost disc space. If there is, then you can simply delete the temp file contained in the folder.
NOTE: I am not sure what the default path is on your system, but some posters have reported other problems when they reassigned the default directory. You can check the path when you first open Plat. The default path name will be listed, I think, in the options screen.

ok if i understand right .with a dic that has read error aborts at same spot, trying same dic in a differnt mode can report the same x amout of temp space used till a good write of a dic is made of a good dic. can this {trying to copy the bad dic in deffernt modes.} lock up the program?

chapman,
If the particulat dvd you are trying to back-up has a physical problem, it will produce errors at the same point everytime. You can try cleaning it, sometimes this helps. You can try using DVD Rescue. But the point is that when reading errors occur, the process SEEMS to stall. That is because DXC is retrying the bad sectors. I have seen, however, if the error is bad enough (some number of retries, or some other trigger), the program will indeed lock-up. Control+Alt+Del can get you out of the program, but the temp file will remain on the hard drive.
Let's say you try simple mode and you get the problem. The size of the temp file at the time of abort will be dependent upon the position of the flaw on the dvd disc and the amount of the data that was successfully read that your settings dictate should be transcribed to the temp file. Now let us say you repeat the process, but this time choose advanced. The generated temp file size will again be dependent upon the location of the flaw (which is the same) and the amount of transcribed data. In many instances, this will result in the SAME file size. That is because for both simple and advanced, the file structure remains somewhat the same for the 321 lead-in, the FBI or Interpol lead-in, opening credits and actual movie. The difference between simple and advanced MAY only start to influence the file size when the movie itself is complete and the extra files are added. Note, this is NOT the case with all movies, but with some movies.
