I have DVDxCopy v1.5.2. It frequently freezes while writing a disk (counter shows the same remaining time for 10+ minutes and if I click the "cancel entire copy" button, "not responding" shows up in the program title bar). The only way to get out is to click the x in the top, right window to close program. Windows responds with "Do you want to close this nonresponsive program?". Once I respond "yes", Windows does a hard shut down of the program and asks if I'd like to report the problem to Microsoft. Has anyone had a similar problem? What fixed it?

To trouble shoot, I installed an earlier version of the program I own but it does the same thing leading me to believe it's probably not a glitch in version 1.5.2. I defragmented my hard drive to optimize performace with no apparent result. I have a relatively fast system (1.6 GHz AMD Duron processor with 512 mb ram) and fairly fast drives (Sony DRU510a and DRU700). I'm using Ritek Ridata 8x DVD-R media which has always worked well in the past.

I should also mention, when I select "Advanced Options" if I select "External Nero Program" for my DVD burn engine, it seems to work 100% of the time but the disk are only readable in my computer, not in my DVD player or PS2. If I select "Gearworks Burn Engine", the duplicates are comaptible with all DVD players I've tried but it locks up 80%+ times I try to make a duplicate.

First off a few housecleaning issues. A Duron 1.6 is not a relatively fast system... But that's neither here nor there.

The first concern and something you didn't mentiuon is did this ever run or did something recently change to cause the problem? The most likely issue is XP Service Pack 2. I'd also like to mention that using Nero has historically been more problematic than using the Gear drivers for burning.

That all said, why are you even wasting your time with what has been an obsolete product now for nearly two years? There are FREE products available that do FAR more than DXC ever could do and won't have issues with XP SP2 or other newer related software and that are being supported and updated regularly. DVDXcopy was a good product in it's day, but that day was 2002. In THIS world, a year is ten years.

Nicki,

Apparently I'm out of the loop. Please bring me up to speed on what better products are out there and how I can acquire them. Thanks for the hook up.

nickicap1, that may be true but I am yet to see a free program out there that lets you split a movie over two discs and yet retains the menu (usually on disc 1)in working order. DVDX copy does this. Perhaps in some aspects it still leads the way over others.

I have to agree with you LionelS. I have four other software backup programs including the one that is top rated by most and still revert back to my DVDXCopy from time to time. As far as the free ones I agree again. I have done a massive amount of backups and have yet to see a free one work as well as a purchased one.

Well boys, I'd bet you a Porsche I've burned more stuff than both of you combined, and from my view the program I recommended in the PM runs rings around DVDXcopy, Express and everything else I've used. I'll give you that it won't let you span two discs with the menu in tact, but it does EVERYTHING else imaginable. And there's no crappy warning pane and no failures to properly traverse the start point like DVDXcopy routinely experienced. Besides, if you don't want to use compression, use dual layer DVDs. And besides that, I've yet to see any compromise in quality letting even a 2:40 movie compress to one disc with $@#$@.

nickicap1 forgot to mention that xcopy (xcopy, gold, xpress, platinum) will not do the new copy protection out right now also.

Well, I think they're using original DVDXcopy with the ripper. But yes, some of the new protection schemes obviously won't allow Xcopy to work. I outlined in the PM I sent him what those issues are. The point of all this is that software is normally old after six months. With Xcopy being unsupported now for nearly two years and so many other, BETTER options out there, banging one's head against the wall to use something like this isn't a good use of time.

Wow, talking about your jumping to conclusions!!
Well, I am retired and take a lot of pride in my computer setup. So I was a bit offended (as I'm sure you would have been if these comments were directed to you by someone else.) I spend a good deal of time, energy and money keeping my hardware and software up to date.
I only said that I occasionally still use xcopy under certain situations. I would certainly not try to use the old ripper as I'm quite sure it would not work with today's DVD technology. In the few instances I use it my current setup consistently yields perfect results.
Nickicap1, if you would be so kind as to PM me, I would really like to know what backup software you use now that you like so much and, if you're interested, I could share what I use 98% of the time. Thanks.

nickicap1 or anyone, I can't find where these alternatives are talked about. My search resuilts just hangs at "wait" for over 10 mins and I tried several times. If someone could point me to the right link by posting here or advise the topic title and I will try again directly. Or alternatively send me a PM.
By the way it is the Ripper Free version I am using that I am reffering to (I have both versions anyway). I too only use it occassionaly as Nero and XXXXXXXXXX are my main ones but they do not allow you to include the menu when splitting to 2 discs. This is one of the basic things that DVDX copy has had since it came to life and have not seen another out there with this.

Just out of curiosity, why does anyone care at this point whether other product names are used here? It's not like the boys at 321 are gonna lose a sale.
