I have a few movies that backed up fine and all of a sudden, started freezing up on me while viewing. This was after viewing fine the first few times. I am wondering if the sticky labels can be causing this. I do use a disk label applicater to apply them. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If you are still wondering about your labels PLEASE LET ME SAVE YOU SOME TIME and MONEY as not to make the mistake I did. I backed up a good number od dvd's at this point. Last week I decided to use DIFFERENT LABELS on my dvd - cheap compusa labes - 125 labels for 10. NEVER AGAIN. ALL of my burns went fine! I checked each one of them BEFORE the labels were put on. AFTER the labels were put on most would not play at all and the few left that would played with errors. At first I thought I was being paranoid but at this point I am quite confident it is a label issue. The thing is - it threw me off because I do usually use labels - but I use memorex labels and NEATO (Fellows) labels ever since I started and ha absolytely no problems. ONLY WHEN I USED THOSE STUPID COMP USA LABELS DID I HAVE ENOUGH COASTERS TO SUPPLY THE WHOLE WORLD WITH. So thats money lost for disks, the labels and my time.
FYI! I hope that is helpful info to you and anyone else!

Thanks. I think I have the same problem as you. I tried going on the cheap and buying off brand labels and began having problems with freezing up issues. I have removed the lables and now they all work like a charm! To remove the lables I followed someone's instructions on using WD40...just spray on generously...soak for about 30mins or so....remove lable and wahs with dish soap. works for me!

If any of the oil from the WD40 or soap gets on the reading side of the disk accidently - will it be destroyed? NOT THAT IT MATTERS BECAUSE I CAN ONLY GO UP FROM HERE *L* But seriously - If this will help me save my disks - I want to do it it correctly!

So far it has fixed all freeze up problems. Just make sure you wash them thoroughly with liquid dish soap. Smell them after drying to make sure they still don't smell like wd40. This has also woked for movies I sent to my brother that didn't work on his player...he removed lables and now they work fine. If you use a lable applicator and apply labels perfectly even and the labels are name brand such as neato or memorex...the freeze problems may not occur. but cheap labels not even is a definate recipe for freeze ups or disks that don't work. Some players are pickier than other. Let me know if this works for you.

REDCOAT:
I had a chance to finally do the labeling removal process and it DID WORK! Not only did it work - but I had actually thrown the disks all over the place not taking care of them (because I did not know at the time I could remove the labels) and with all the scratch marks and everything most of them play again. The few I had problems with - I had to re-wash and they played - and there are a couple that I think because of throwing them around they are just too scratched up but I DONT CARE - I am grateful that you helped me save the majority of those disks and I was about one day away from throwing them away until you told of the removal process so THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Excellent! Glad to hear it helped. The ones that gave you problems I have 3 questions:
1. What kind of labels were they
2. Were they applied using a disk applicator
3. What brand DVD player do you have?
The ones that gave me probs were generic labels that were put on by hand. I have since purchased a cd applicator by neato and haven't had problems as of yet. I think some DVD players are pickier than others.

Hey Readcaot:
The labels were cheap off name Compusa
I did apply them using a neato applicator though
I have 3 Apex, a portable Mintek, (and also tested them also on a Sylvania)
2 of my Apex's are real old so I always use them as the dvd's to test on because if they play on those they will play on anything - especially new.
I don't believe I RE-tested them on the Mintek or Sylvania (which play EVERYTHING because they are very new) But if you saw how scratched up these were - you would probably be thinking thats what it was - I mean I Literally were throwing them around the room like frisebee's before I read the information you had written to help me *L* not realizing they could be salvaged.
Also I have noticed that a small few that I had done using the memorex and neato (I cannot distinguish at this point which were which because they have been on a while)have started giving me problems here and there. Not most of them - but just a few - I have taken those lables off now also - and they work again. So I have decided at this point to ONLY USE CORE labeling.

Seems I remeber seeing one of the Rag-Taggers mentioning applying labels before burning the disc gave better playability.

1. WD-40 contains a LOT of wax, and if any remains on the read side, you'll get errors. Use Liquid Wrench instead - it only contains the solvents.
2. The read side of the disk (CD or DVD) is the more robust side. The medium is actually on the label side, so THAT'S the one you need to be careful with. If you want to make a disk totally & permanently unreadable, just scratch the label side. Anyone who works in a security or intelligence job in the government or military can attest to that fact. If you have scratches on the read side (even deep ones), they can be polished out with simple machines like the Disk Doctor (http://www.diskdoctor.com.au/), Skip Doctor (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005B9W6/002-7879344-1764062?v=glance), or OptiFix (http://xbox.cebru.com/electronics/P000IngnglL1d0/Memorex_32028007_CD_DVD_Optifix_Motorized_Cleaner_and_Scratch_Repair/).
3. For the best results all-around, get a printer like the Epson R300 and print directly to your (printable) disks. The weight of the ink won't throw them out of balance, and they just look better! :-D

I had no idea that the disk info is on the label side! I have scratched my DVD's pretty good getting the labels off (using a sharp knife to get under the label after using WD40) but I have been able to play them? How does the DVD player read the disk? I thought the laser reads it from the bottom. I will try the wrench stuff instead....I was wondering what those little goopy particles were. Thanks!

I Just bought some Neato Clear labels and will be experimenting with those. They were more expensive...15.00 for 20 labels. After applying one...it left air bubbles underneath...now I want to remove and try again. The material of the clear label is different and I wonder if removing will be as easy. I did get one on a different movie and it works fine so far....but regular matte finish labels also worked fine at first and thenn gave problems later. The clear labels claim to not throw off the balance but the jury is still out for now. I will advise of my success using clear labels.

The info isn't on the label side; the medium that STORES the info is on the label side. The laser shoots from the bottom, through the thick plastic of the disc, and hits the bottom of the medium (ink or foil). But the medium is almost on the top surface, so scratching the bottom surface never hurts it - the scratch is only in the clear plastic, so it can be polished away & the disk can still be read.
But if you scratch the TOP, you remove the medium, making the disk unreadable.

Steve83....Thanks for the info...I will be more careful with the label side. I actually removed some of my labels with WD40 and a sharp knife. I have scratched the surface deep enough that you can feel it. Surprisingly they still work with the sratched tops! The info on the disk must be a little lower that my scratch.

NEATO CLEAR LABELS.....I just removed a matte finish (neato) from a home DVD that was freezing up. I checked the DVD without label....worked fine. So I then tested the the same DVD after applying a neato clear label and the DVD works fine! So for now...goodby sharpie and back to Nice labels. If anyone else can share their experience using clear labels, that would be great. Also if you want to put on a clear label on a DVD that you have already marked on with a sharpie...you CAN remove the sharpie with hairspray and paper towel! It worked for me!

WOW I have been out a little bit from Holidays but I see people are still contributing in here - I am happy to see. Just goes to show you how much we can all learn from each other.
Steve83 - thanx for sharing more input - I have never heard of the wrench thing but it sounds like something I should be able to find anywhere. That oil is a monster - I have usually been washing it and then using my bare fingers to sort of smear off the oily parts that just wont get off the disk - and as far as the reading side is concerned - you shed a lot of light on why our scratched up disks seem to have no problem.

The component of the hairspray that you're actually using is the alcohol. Sharpies (and most other permanent markers) are alcohol-based, so they can be removed from non-porous surfaces with rubbing alcohol, or almost any other type. Denatured is probably the most potent since it's much more concentrated, but it's harsher on your skin for the same reason.
Another potent remover is "Goof-Off", but it contains a blend of ALL KINDS of freaky petrochemicals, so don't use it frequently or without GOOD ventilation. Methyl-Ethyl Ketone (MEK) is bad for your gray matter! :-p
BTW
Liquid Wrench is available in any auto parts or hardware store. The spray cans are either yellow or light blue, and it's made by Gunk.

http://www.surething.com/ST/
PPS I do a lot of CDs and DVDs over 1200 so far and put all labels on the top of your CDs and DVDs not on the side that you just record on

OK But what if it's a double-sided disk; do I put labels on both sides?
