Some observations and a question since I've had some time to try XCopy 1.52 and Platinum 3.1.1 (removed Xpress 3.0.2) in different modes using +RW TDK media for disc 1 of "24" episodic.

1. Platinum Simple (Xpress 3.0.4)- Only functions with "enire disk" option checked. Reads, writes, formats, plays on standalone well, compressed to 4.12GB. When not using checkbox, reads complete in 3 sec, asks for blank media, recognizes media, burns "complete" in 3 seconds, finalizes, only plays few seconds of intro titleset.

2. Platinum Avanced-all titlesets checked, compresses 7.65GB to 56%, previews most titlesets, reads, formats, writes, plays on standalone, final size = 4.12GB

3. Advanced-NO compression reads 100% but will burn "complete" immediately after pressing start after recognizing media then stops and asks for "new movie", obviously failed.

4. DVDXCopy- Reads, splits 7.65GB to 3.8GB and 3.89GB, writes, plays on standalone. No problems.

Are these characteristics "the norm" at this point?

dtjtdt,
I would suggest a re-install of the software.

Do the install over the top of the previous install, and then when asked if you want to reboot, say no, then reboot manually.

I did reinstall Platinum 3.1.1 over itself. It did does fully function, no more problems as outlined above, Thanks

Plat 3.1.1 seemsd to be working fine(ish). However I still cannot get 'Preview' to work. It keeps giving me the same message. 'FAILED to intiater filter. Install all DirectX filters comming with setup'. Then 'Preview fatal error.Cannot render'. Their typos, not mine. Anyway...fixes anyone? I DO have the latest version of DirectX from Microsoft. Everything is current in my system. This little thing drives me crazy. It is the last fix I need.

HELP!!!

Goumba & Peeps 101

I tried pretty much everything with Platinum advanced & DVDxCOPy & I couldn't get a working backup of Daddy Day Care Full Screen.

I ended up using DVDxCOPy 1.5.2 & backed up the wide screen version.

If anyone finds out how to backup the full screen titleset, I'd like to know how.

This is a perect reason why you should use RW discs first, until you have it figured out. They may cost a bit more, but its better than wasting media.

Ireland, thanks for the tip. I did uninstall all my DVD things like Sonic MyDVD 4.0.4 and Nero 6.0.0.9 (yeah...the 0.0.9 is correct, goofy, huh?) and I reinstalled Plat 3.1.1 and I still get the same messages. I guess I will just wait till 321 (blast-off) fixes it later. I imagine it will be cured when they add the rest of the app to the greyed out buttons. Thanks again though.

Platinum 3.1.1 reads and burns well, unfortunately the disks will not play in two different PC's or stand alone units (Pioneer & Sony). I am getting the "Unknown file format" error. The same is true of Platinum Express.

I have gone back to DVDX 1.5.2 and Express 2.5.2 which still work (fingers crossed). Hopefully 321 will get the bugs out of Platinum soon.

do you also have the latest driver of your videocard..?
i once had rendering problems.--> with videopreview
It can have something to do with your grafhicscard, "screeresolution" and 16 or 32 bit colors prefs..
put it very low.. and see what happens.
)screen 800-600 with 16 bit colors.
-if this does not help.. sorry.. i just gave it a try

Posse. yeah all the latest drivers for my NVidia Riva TNT2 Model 64/64 Pro. Also d.l'ed Regclean.exe to, well, reg clean. No luck. Tried the resolution reset. again, no luck. I had also uninstalled PowerDVD, Nero 6.0.0.9, Sonic MyDVD (video capture to DVD file. happiest software ever! All 70 of my Mystery Science Theater 3000 crap tapes to DVD!Yay!) Anymore its not that I actually even care about previewing (I mean , I do but you know what I mean). It has now become the fact that it is just a machine that kind of HAS to listen to me! and darn it I WILL get it to work. Either that or I will make the machine get down and give me 20 push-ups! Besides...its fun monkeying with software. When I started it was DOS. Windows was YEARS away. So no matter what, this is cooking with fire!

Another Q is how does everyone get that line at the bottom in order to write a seperate note. In all my years I have found that it is very good to ask questions even though they seem stupid. A question is worth 1000 keystrokes. Tap the info source.

Did you try just backing up the Full Screen version of Daddy Day Care using Express ?
Also, were you able to back up the widescreen version using Platinum and copying some extras also, or did you just use XCopy ?
PS: Glad others are having the same problem with this movie, so I know its not just me.

thanks.

goumba,

I didn't try Express, or Platinum's Simple mode due to all the over compression issues, besides the movie doesn't need compression. To me DVDxCOPY or Platinum advanced is the only way. I don't care for compression.

I'm pretty sure I tried grabbing the wide screen title set with Platinum.

DCDxCOPY 1.5.2 was the only way I could get it to work, even then it was only with the widescreen version.

I Copied Daddy Day Care with platinum 3.1.1 selected the titlesets, and it plays in widescreen and fullscreen on my phillips dvd player, but on my sony nc715 it would not play in widescreen. Picture is flawless.

Thanks

Edit your personal settings @ the afterdawn.com link at top of this page to include whatever "signature" you want to appear below the line you are asking about. When posting, make sure the box to use your signature is checked.

Amen to install in "Safe Mode".

whisperer:

FWTW: I got my opticals installed on my Promise ATA in the DMA mode by changing them temporarily, i.e.putting them on an EIDE channel, going into the Bios (which now recognizes them on boot-up) and then changing to DMA. After change, I put them back on the ATA card. DMAs works fine. I've got HDs: 120GB x 2, 100GB x 1, 30GB USB, DVD burners x 2 (HP+ & Sony-/+), PleXwriter and a DVD-Rom installed in my ALIEN. Maybe someone can try this tip and find it helpful.

Question - Has anyone been able to get Platinum to work correctly using Win98SE?

I just got around to testing ver 3.1.1 today. And as with previous versions, I have no problems with installing, reading, burning, or playing.

My problem is I have no control over the actual resulting compression. It still way over-compresses. As an example, 6.85GB becomes 2.62GB, leaving about 37% of the disk blank. The compression slider slides but won't stick where I put it. In this example it defaults to 37% for all titlesets and shows a total compression of 63%. If I'm doing my math right (am I? this is confusing), this should take 4.31GB of space, not 2.62GB.

I'm wondering is this a Win98SE specific problem, or do you Win2k and XP users also have the problem. More specifically, is this a FAT32 file type problem (only option in Win98SE), or do Win2k and XP people using NTFS file types also have this problem.

Please don't construe this message in any way to be complaining - I'm very, very satisfied with both DXC and DXCX. Both work perfectly on my P3 Win98SE platform. And DXC and DXCX cover about 95% of my needs. I can wait until Platinum is ready for prime time for the other 5%.

I can't get Platinum to work properly no matter what I do. I went back to Express 2.5.2 and it works fine. I never could get DVDX Copy 1.5.2 to work either but I discovered something. I was using DVDX Copy 1.4 and Express 2.5.2 at the same time. When I installed Platinum I removed both programs. When Platinum did not work I re-installed Express only. Low and behold without the lousey gear drivers my computer started working fast. It seems the gear drivers were slowing down Windows XP. I'm glad to be rid of DXDX Copy. I use freeware to copy DVD5's and have no need to use it. In fact Express is all I need.

In advanced, isn't there a check-box to backup the movie without compression and split it over two disks?
Yes that is an option but if you were just backing up a titleset containing the main movie, menu, and DD5.1 for a total of less than 5GB, it makes no sense to me to span it over 2 discs. A 13% compression factor would allow it to be written to 1 disc with no degradation of PQ except to the extremely discernable eye.

There have also been reports that Platinum is using some compression on single layer DVD's which really isn't necessary at all. I personally can't confirm this as I still use DXC 1.52 to back up anything that will fit on one disc.

Have a great one!

Who is this General Failure, and why is he reading my drive C: ?

Grampaw,

I have W2K and XP boxes using the NTFS file system and see the compression issues. I don't think it's specific to FAT32.

I have searched posts and have not yet found a workable solution for backing up Simpsons Season 3 Disc 2
I have tried using Platinum 3.11 in each mode, Xpress, and Dxc gold.
I have tried removing special features by just selecting titlesets 1,2,3 (eliminating 4-5-6-7-8) and still no luck
Most of the time it gets hung up reading disc at 19%...

I was able to use Platinum successfully with all titlesets on discs 1&3

Has anyone had luck with Disc 2 (and also I understand Disc 4 has similar issues)?

If so, which 321 product did you use...and how?

Thanks in advance to anyone who will help!

Thanks for the info. I never compress ... ever. I guess I do have "the extremely discernable eye", as you say. (progressive scan non-interlaced output, HDTV etc etc.) I love DXC 1.5.2, just like you, for that reason. I'm not much into TV productions much vs real Hollywood movies but I will love Platinum too when I can do the few episodics plus the extra/special feature/bonus type disks that 1.5.2 can't handle too. But all in 1:1 quality.

A dvd changer resolves the split-over-two-disks issue for me. The 7 disk JVC changer is also usefull for just checking (jumping chapters) that I got viable backups three movies loaded at a time. Or put to my original movie in between the two split disks to check that the chapter split was perfect etc.

Since there is no such thing as dual layer burning, I split all original movies disks that contain a total of over 4.38GB onto two disks just like 1.5.2 tells me to. Not only for 1:1 quality but I also want all soundtracks (in case I play the movie at a friend's house who doesn't have (for instance) a dts-ES decoding amplifier or similar situation). And I want all the extras and special features too.

Best regards

I have successfully used DXC and Express but Platinum has been nothing but a failure for me. I have 2 drives, one for reading one for writing the writer is a Plextor 708A (latest firmware) Platinum reads and when reaches 100% tells me the burn was ok. Watching it, the read/write LED never changed color, indicating it never attempted to write.

I am so desperate to get this thing to work that I did a clean install of XP with just the service packs, then Platinum, same failures. This rules out any software conflict issues.

What should I do next?
