Note to all: With chmagic's approval I moved his/her thread from Chat with the President to where it belongs and have removed it from the inappropriate thread. Rag Tag 3 CHMAGIC WROTE: I am a long time user of xpress and xcopy I am now becoming angry and frustrated I can not get platinum to work it reads the movie then prompts to insert blank disk but never finds it thus the burn button never turns green and stays grey. If I uninstall platinum and install the stand alone version of xpress ver. 3.0.2 it finds the blank DVD and records.
the problem is the stand alone ver.#3.0.2 doesn’t always copy gets down to the last seconds then error (wasting my time) I have been told the problem is corrected in platinum. BUT I CAN NOT GET PLATINUM TO WORK!
I have placed many calls to tech support ( by the way with a 45 min. to an hour wait long distance calls costing me a fortune) only to be told that they are aware of the problem and a patch should be coming out thus 3.1.1 platinum I have the same problem every time I call or send email I am asked the same questions about other software and what model burner I am using and know one has come up with an answer . I have asked repeatedly why, if platinum I am told by tech support is based on Xpress would the stand alone version of Xpress 3.0.2 find the blank DVD allowing the burn but platinum will not I GET KNOW ANSWER just email asking the same questions I have already answered. Would I be correct in assuming a programming error. I have tried 4 different brands of disks both – and + same result so that is not the problem I do not use roxio so that is not the problem I removed Nero so that is not the problem I do not use veritas so that is not the problem. I use a TDK model 440N burner. WILL I EVER GET A ANSWER AND GET THIS PROGRAM TO RUN! HELP

I'd say you communicated quite well your thoughts about how to set up the Optical and Hard drives on a "hobbyist" motherboard. I have a similar setup.

For 321 Studio products, I use a surplus P3 Win98SE computer I setup back in 1999. It has both an ATA RAID controller and the standard EIDE controller on the "hobbyist" motherboard. I connected the two hard drives as primary-master and secondary-master on the ATA controller, and the two optical drives (DVD-ROM and DVD-writer) also as primary-master and secondary-master but on the EIDE controller.

I'm convinced that having all connections as masters, and having the hard drives and optical drives on separate controllers, is a big reason why I never have reading/burning problems with any of the 321 Studio software. This setup is also fast - consistently reading/burning a 2.4x +R blank disk using DXC in less than 30 mins.

OK, someone out there has to be having this same issue. This has been happening since 3.0.0. When using simple, the movie copies perfect, and plays in both my DVD equiped PCs, but when playing these discs in my $500 Denon DVD-1600 stand alone player, I get hesitations during playback. These hesitations are similar to layer change pauses, but they happen roughly every 7-8 minutes. The movie "Volcano" alone had 14 hesitation spots!

Now the plot sickens. I seem to be able to play these discs in my $200 Pioneer DV-333 stand alone player. Before I bought Platinum, I gave the trial version of XCopy a try, and was able to copy "The Two Towers" and play it back perfectly in all players. I can use X Rescue and playback these discs perfectly as well in all players.

I have read a few threads on the subject, but there were no real fixes for this issue. I have tried using Nero to write the ripped movie files to media, but have had the same result. So this leads me to think it's the ripped files, and not the hardware or the media.

I suspect that certain stand alone DVD players have chipsets that either are compatible or not with the way that Platinum creates the files to be written to the discs, regardless of media type. I looked into firmware updates for my Denon, but no such luck. Any ideas?

The simple mode of DXC Platinum works like DXC XPress, which compresses a movie to allow it to fit on one dvd. DVD players vary in the way they display highly compressed video. Many posters have complained that DXC Platinum's Simple mode overovercompresses movies to the point that they don't fill a DVD. This level of compression can cause some DVD players to display artifacts, which I believe you are describing as hesitations. I don't know the specs on your Denon player, but I suspect it is a progressive scan model. I've seen the effect that you're describing when playing highly compressed DVDs on a progressive scan model.

Fortunately, the Advanced Mode of DXC Platinum works much like DXC did (but with a different burn engine), so that movies are backed up without compression. So, if you liked the way that your trial copy of DXC copied "The Two Towers," you'll probably be equally satisfied with the results from DXC Platinum Advanced Mode.

From the news that's been discussed here and on other threads, DXC Platinum users can expect several revisions to the program between now and the end of the year. The revisions will enable some features that are currently disabled and address compatibility and performance issues that some users are experiencing. Maybe one of the enhancements will be less aggressive compression in the Simple mode.

Try the Advanced mode and let us know how it turns out. Good luck.

I just tried backing up Daddy Day Care in Advanced mode with the 3.1.1 release.

I don't understand why Platinum doesn't display full/wide next to each title set, like DVDxCOPY does.

I had to use DVDxCOPy to see that titleset 1 was widescreen & Titleset 3 was the full screen version.

However when you use Platinum's "Video Preview" both titlesets are displayed in full screen. Definitely a problem.

The advanved backup of the full screen titleset, apeared to complete sucessfully, however the disk was only burned 50% & wouldn't play. The advanced backup of widescreen wasn't playable either.

I went back to the good ol DVDxCOPY 1.52 & made a perfect backup of the wide-screen title set. For some reason the backup of the full screen titleset keeps replaying the Tristar intro.

Obviously 321 has troubles reading this title, but at least DVDxCOPY can create a working backup.

Looks like I'll have to wait for the next update to Platinum.

Praise for Platinum and 321 Studios

I have been reading this thread since about page 8. Watching the ups and downs in the release cycle of this product has been interesting to say the least. Having some concerns regarding the usability of the program I had an IM conversation going with 321_QA.

This conversation assured me that 321 Studios would stand by the product and work with me to resolve any problems. After some more reading I took the plunge and purchased Platinum 3.1.1.

In preparation I did all of the following:

1) Updated BIOS on DVD Reader and my Sony DRU-510a internal drive. (I am also running the DSS program from Sony in a more optimal setting for reliable burning)
2) Verified that no possibly conflicting programs such as DLA / InCD etc installed
3) Ran ForceASPI to force ASPI layer in Windows 2000. Rebooted As Instructed.
4) Defragged hard drive
5) Used EndItAll to cancel all background programs such as Zone Alarm and Palm Synchronization.
6) Ran Belarc Report of System
7) Installed and activated DVD X Copy Platinum 3.1.1
8) Reboot of Computer
9) Repeat step 5
10) Proceed to burn disks successfully in both Simple (Express) mode, Advanced mode with all titles or select titles with custom compression.
11) Preview window plays flawlessly
12) Successful burns with DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R
13) Backups include 1 foreign documentary, one US based documentary, 2 episodic disks from the Second Season of Queer As Folk, a Disney movie and a horror film.
14) ALL BACKUPS ON ALL FORMATS PLAY PERFECTLY. No problems with playback on computer, Playstation 2, or multiple set top DVD Players.

I would HIGHLY advise anyone who wishes to buy this software take the time to prepare their systems to properly accept the program. DVD X Copy Platinum is a very custom written application that has specific needs. You need to have your system ready and in an ideal environment for this tool. Eventually more compatibility will be added. There have been improvements and I have yet to have any problems.

My package from 321 Studios showed up in the mail today. A disk with 3.1.1 in a DVD case and a Copy of DVD X Show as I purchased that as the same time. The packaging was professional and even has a good statement about protecting fair use. Truly high class.

For reference I would like to point to the following links:

1) My Belarc Report can be found at: http://www.biglobemafia.com/dvdxcopy/log.htm
2) A screenshot of END It All shutting down services can be found at: http://www.biglobemafia.com/dvdxcopy/services.jpg
3) The document I followed from 321 Studios regarding optimal system environments: http://dvdxcopy.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/49909

I feel confident in the support given to me prior to even being a customer and the fact that the program works well, all total burn times have been under 40 minutes including the reads. If you have any questions or would like more information regarding my configuration after looking at the above files please let me know and I will be happy to provide.

Does your Denon owners manual list compatibility with -R media? About 6 months ago a denon owner found out that his $900 high end denon player was not even made to play recordable dvd's, only commercial dvd's. Man ... was that guy was ever angry!

If that is not the problem, then it probably is having trouble with compressed movies. Sorry to go against the grain of those that want to fit a movie on one disk, but with top end eqiptment like yours and progressive scan output why lower quality with compression??? A very usable blank -R disk cost 1 crumby dollar. Go for 1:1 quality and split the movie onto two disks. Just my opinion ...

Best regards

Thanx to everyone for your suggestions and help. I will give some more different brands of media a try (xfdog's suggestion).

Also, up until recently, I have had limited success with Advanced mode copying. I kept running into that 99% read error, then it seems that after ASPI was installed, I finally got a disk to copy. I will try copying just the movie in Advanced and see what happens (4xburner's suggestion).

As far as compatibility goes (Whisperer's suggestion), the Denon manual clearly states compatibility with DVD-R R4.7 discs. Also as stated in my previous post, complete copies of discs seem to play perfectly. Now get this: Movies like Broken Arrow, Volcano, and The Ghost and the Darkness to name a few, all copied fine via X Rescue and played in my Denon. BUT, when copying the movie only, all of these movies had varying degrees of hesitation occurences. THEN, I copied Mission Impossible, which has both widescreen and standard versions of the movie on the same side of the disc. Needless to say, when you cram four hours of video onto a disc that holds 2 hours of high quality video, the picture is going to look like cottage cheese, but the movie played fine, in spite of the high compression. This movie was the only one of at least ten so far that I was able to copy just the move to a disc and be able to play without hesitation problems.

I will try the above suggestions...thanx again for all the help!

This is incorrect. With some titles just the main movie is more than 4.36GB and Platinum uses compression. As I mentioned in a previous post when backing up "Tears of the Sun" the main movie files totalled 4.98GB so DXCP reported that it would use 13% compression bringing the total to 4.33GB and thereby capable of fitting on 1 disc. It actually used 42% compression which made the total 2.89GB and believe me, the compression factor is very noticeable on my 55" Mits.

I did another movie, "Narc", and the main movie titleset was 5.21GB. DXCP reported it would use 17% compression making the total 4.32GB, but instead used 47% compression making the total 2.76GB

The compression factor really needs to be addressed.
Who is this General Failure, and why is he reading my drive C: ?

Hey to leadvocal ,
In advanced, isn't there a check-box to backup the movie without compression and split it over two disks?

I was about to post something similar when I read your post. I have tried backing up Daddy Day Care 3 times and so far have wasted 3 disks. I have tried only copying the Full Screen version all 3 times since this is the only one I want. First, I tried using XCOPY 1.5.2- after burning it did not work in either the computer or my DVD player Second I tried using Platinum with no compression, checkin all titlesets except the wide screen version- this time I at least got the 321 warning and the Tristar playing over & over & over again. The third try I noticed a few titlesets (namely titelset 12) does not video preview and commonly caused my preview to freeze and I had to shut down. I tried checking only the Full Screen titleset along with a few titlesets for DVD extras, but did not check a majority of them, same thing- this time I only got the 321 warning and then nothing. When I put the disks into my home DVD player, the disk would freeze and I coulnt get it to Stop, I had to unplug my DVD playr and plug it back in to get my disk out. This is frustrating- anyone had similar problems or an explanation ? I was going to try using Xpress 2.5.2 and try copying just the Full Screen movie to see if that works but dont want to waste a 4th DVD on this one.

this it what I did before I bought a player I take my copied disks and ask to try the players out I almost bought a bose 1000.00 player but it does not play any of the copied movies, so before you buy a new player make sure it plays all dvd+r and or dvd-R also I found out for me that using the advanced option in platinum the quality is not that good so I use the simple mode its almost as good as version 2.52 ,but keep the faith , RHM will have platinum working soon for all to enjoy

Hello, I've been reading this thread for almost 2 weeks now and I've finally gone back to DXC 1.5.2 and DXCX 2.5.1. They work great on my machine. I do want to list my system specs. and issues with DXCP 3.1.1 in hopes that it will help resolve these and other issues soon. I really like the looks of DXCP but cannot get it to work the way it should.
System Specs Hardware:
1G processor, 512M RAM, Sony DRU-510UL Ext. Firewire DVD Burner, 30G hard drive, 32M ATI Video card
System Specs Software:
Windows ME w/all updates and service packs, WinDVD4, Veritas RecordNow, Panda Antivirus&Firewall (Disabled when using 321 Products), ASPI Ver. 4.72.1, DirectX 9.0b, No Bad List software installed
Problems:
Simple Mode way over compresses movie, Advanced Mode will not preview (I get the Directx error), Advanced mode will not recognize blank DVD media after reading movie.
I have not been able to find resolutions to these problems thru the thread. I've spent hours looking. If I've missed a solution somewhere please let me know. I would love any help I could get!!

I also had problems with "Daddy Day Care" and I made a post on page 49, 24 Sept, 11:03 PM.

I would like to add that immediately following my post I was ridiculed by another member because "I should feel lucky that I am getting a copy at all."

I was just, as you folks are, trying to post a problem that I feel should be addressed by 321.

Instead, I was humiliated!

And, to add insult to injury, 321_Q/A added a post (25 Sept, 12:17 PM) that commended this members action.

To think that 321_Q/A carries this type of attitude, I find to be very disheartening to say the least. And I thought that I read earlier that 321_ Q/A is an employee of 321 Studios. If that is true, does this also reflect the attitude of the company itself?

I certainly hope not.

We're all in this together folks, and we certainly DO NOT need members sniping each other when they try to report a legitimate problem.

Thanks

Re: Compression %

I have also seen that the compression rate claimed is usually different from the *actual* end result. For me, this has improved in Platinum 3.1.1.

With 3.1.0, I had movies Platinum claimed would be compressed 20% that were compressed 30% (5.9G original to 4.13G copy) and another claim of 34% turned out to be 44% (6.5G to 3.64G). While not the huge difference that “leadvocal” posted, still not close enough.

I have only backed up a few movies since going to 3.1.1, but those were much closer to what is claimed (within 5%). The really strange thing I noticed was on 2 supposedly uncompressed backups that are *actually* compressed about 4 to 5%! A 2 disk split of “Pretty Woman 10th Anniversary edition” ended up at 4.13G + 3.28G= 7.41G total vs. the original @ 7.74G. The other was “Phenomenon” which is only 4.29G to start but copied to 4.12G with supposedly no compression??? Not a huge deal probably but the compression issue does need to be addressed which I’m confident will be the case in future releases.
