I upgraded to Platinum the other day and have noticed a few things... I tried to back up the movie Midway. I have a Sony 500A writer. I put the movie in my player and let the burner read it. I then let it write the movie to a +R disk. I put it in my Daewoo 5800 player and got a disk error..I then put another +R disk in and let Xpress backit up....I'm watching it now on TV it did fine...Now the question is..Do I put the Platinum on Ebay or Xpress?

JohninTN,

Well, here are the results of Platinum V3.1.1:

Advanced mode, Checked all TitleSets for compression, and used the preset 44% compression. Locked the TitleSets for compression. Size of files before compression, 7.71 gigs. Size of files after compression, 4.14 gigs. Platinum step 1 completed the rip in 49 minutes. Step 2 burn completed in 21 minutes, blank media used Memorex 2.4x, +RW. Movie tested on standalones RCA drc 220, RCA 5220p, Sony 325, and Apex AD1200. Sharp 740u only plays -R media. JohninTN, my thoughts are the same the file size compressed by Platinum needs to be increased from the current 4.12-4.14 gigs to 4.36 gigs. Minimum compression level needs to be user adjustable, Maximum compression also needs to be user adjustable.

The video quality is good for analog television systems, but a real problem for progressive scan standalones, and HD TV owners.

I have one question..If thats the case and the user has to set the compression for each movie doesn't it make Plat a little usless compared to Gold or Xpress? Which brings these questions.

1, Why is Plat. better than the other two programs? Gold and Xpress.

2, If Plat won't work on todays tv systems of which I'm getting ready to buy one when I move, what good is it?

well it has to do more with file size of the original movie, as to the quality of the video you get. More compression, the less video quality. Less compression the better quality.

If you're going to get a big screen or HDTV then you don't want to use any compression. That means using two disks for more than 4.3gb of data. Any compression that drops the dvd standard lower than it is for commercially made movies is bound to be noticeable on HDTV sets.
