puff2345,
To put them on separate IDEs, you would hook one of the ROM drives to the IDE cable that runs to a hard drive. Then you would hook your other ROM drive (if installed) to the IDE that the other hard drive (if installed) is hooked to.
The basic idea is to not have two ROM drives on the same IDE.
It will help some, and others will not notice a difference.

the cable are 40 pin ide... how do you put them on seperate ide's ? they are on cable select now and i think the rom is primary. not sure how to tell from looking in device manager. Why put the rom as master? and can i do that on cable select?

As far as the separate ROM IDE channels questions above, do you mean configure like this way I set my box up? (Stollery doesn't like my setup; he thinks I should have ROM and Ripper on the same channel)
IDE1: 0: HDD: IBM 60GB (Master)(DMA)(OS+DXC)
IDE1: 1: LiteOn 16X DVD ROM (Slave)(DMA)
IDE2: 0: Pioneer A05 (-R) Writer (Master)(DMA)
IDE2: 1: HDD: IBM 60GB (Slave)(DMA)(Pagefile)
-----------------------------------------------
As far as the IDE cable questions: But ... I am using 80 wire ribbon cables for both IDE channels and get 7-12 minute rips. Maybe it's just newer bios/chipset improvements that don't cause issues with the 80 wire cables?
(B.T.W.: they all have 40 pins, I think what you mean to say is 40 WIRE vs 80 WIRE ribbon cables).
Best regards

I tend to agree with stollery on this. But hey whatever works for one might not for another. That config seems to be the best for copy on fly though so it may be what is needed for some to get dxc to work right. It would not in an older compaq I just had in my shop for repairs. The chipset as you mentioned does seem to have a great deal to do with it.

Whisperer - I know this question wasn't directed at me, but there seems to be a lot of controversy about the proper setup. Matter-of-fact, there is a differing opinion, to the way I feel, offered in this months Maximum PC mag.
As far as 40/80 wire goes - we have encountered a number of problems running 80 wire on ROMs and burners, so we go exclusively with 40 wire. Sometimes you can get away with it, or times you can't. It differs from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Whisperer,
Yea, you're right.. I made a mistake by saying "40/80 pin" rather than "40/80 wire"
Your setup is exactly what I was describing. (or trying to..) That setup seems to work the best and fastest when multiple ROM drives are involved.
You may be right that it's just newer bios/chipset improvements that are allowing some to use both ROM drives on the same IDE without experiencing any slowdown..
I know on one of the test boxes here both ROM drives are on the same IDE and I usually rip in under 15 min.

i am not having a problem ripping. my rip times are approx. 5-18 min. per disc. [average about 13 min. per disc.] depending on movie, how many titlelsets etc...
my problem is with low buffer, shaky or fluctuating. also movies that appear successfully burned are not playing in anything including pc. had great success with 1.31 and 1.41 . by the way i just saw robert on tv.
thanks all
jim

my 2 cents worth,
my hp-vl/420 is set up this way.
my copys are between 10 to 14 min.
both hard drives are on one channel and rom, burner are on the other channel both dvd rom and writer are set to c/s,
both ide channels use 80 wire ribbon cables.

OK, I just saw online that MS says the next version of WINDOWS will have built-in support for ALL versions of dvd writers.
