MEMORY , HOW MUCH DO I NEED , WHAT TYPE DO I NEED ???

Here is the link:

http://www.crucial.com/crucial/pvtcontent/memorytype.asp?model=&memtype=CHOOSE

Or you can read it below.

This is from Crucial Memory :

Which Upgrade Should I Choose?
Not sure which upgrade to choose? The information below can help you make a more informed decision.
Don't worry! You really can't make a wrong choice when you're using the Memory Selector™. All of the upgrades the Memory Selector lists for your system are guaranteed to be compatible or your money back.
What size module should I buy?
As long as you don't exceed the maximum memory for your system, bigger is better. We recommend buying the largest module (highest number of MB) that fits into your budget.
To make sure you don't exceed the maximum memory for your system, subtract the amount of memory currently in your system from the maximum memory listed in your system specifications. For example, if your system can take a maximum of 512MB RAM, and you currently have 256MB installed, you can install up to 256MB of additional RAM (512MB - 256MB = 256MB)

Which speed and memory technology should I buy?
In general, you should match the speed and type of memory technology that is already in your system. If you don't know exactly what type of memory you currently have, don't worry; any of the modules listed in the Memory Selector™ for your system should work fine.
Common types of memory technology include fast page mode (FPM), extended data out (EDO), synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM), and double data rate SDRAM (DDR or DDR SDRAM). Most systems will accept only one type of memory technology. (The very few motherboards that can accept more than one type of memory will only allow you to use one type at a time.)
Memory speeds are written in different formats depending on the type of memory technology your computer uses. FPM and EDO speeds are written in nanoseconds (ns). SDRAM and DDR speeds are written in megahertz (MHz) or with a "PC" rating.
It may seem confusing, but faster memory will NOT necessarily make your system faster. Your computer will only run as fast as the "slowest link" in your system, so you can't speed up your computer by adding faster memory. The way to make your system faster is to add more megabytes (MB) of memory.
Here's a rough guide to relative memory speeds. Remember, it's best to match the memory that is currently in your system.

Do I need error checking?
When choosing among ECC, parity, and non-parity memory, you need to match what is already in your system. You can tell which kind you have by looking at one of the modules currently in your system. Count the number of black chips on one module. If the number of chips can be evenly divided by three or five, you should buy ECC or parity (whichever is offered for your system). If not, you should buy non-parity.
For example, if one of your modules has nine chips, you should buy ECC or parity. If one of your modules has eight chips, you should buy non-parity.
If you're building your own system, we recommend using non-parity parts unless you will be using your system as a server or have a need for error checking. ECC and parity parts are slower than non-parity parts.

What does "CL" stand for?
CL stands for "CAS latency," which is the number of clock cycles it takes before data starts to flow once a command is received. Low CAS latency is faster than high CAS latency. However, faster memory will NOT necessarily make your system faster. Your computer will only run as fast as the "slowest link" in your system, so you can't speed up your computer by adding memory that is faster than your current memory. The way to make your system faster is to add more megabytes (MB) of memory.
If you're building your own system, we recommend using parts with low CAS latency.

It's funny you posted this as I was making up something along these lines myself some time ago but figured it would get lost in the forum.But seeing that someone of your stature started it maybe it won't. So I will post it after all.

We are working on the over compression issue as I type.

But for a couple of your concerns, there is one thing I would like to point out.

The DVD size is based on a 1000 based system rather then 1024 (which is the true size system) I do not agree personally that DVDs should be labeled 4.7GB, as they only truely hole 4.36GB. Let me do some math for you to explain a little better.

1000 based system
1000bytes/1Kb
1000Kb/1Mb
1000Mb/1Gb

so according to this system the DVD should have 4.7 Billion bytes of information.

Now lets take that number and put it into the true size specifications

1024bytes/1Kb
1024Kb/1MB
1024MB/1GB

so 1024³x4.7

this is equal to 5046586572.8 bytes

but a dvd only holds 4.7 billion bytes, so we work out

4,700,000,000
/
1024³
=
4.37.........ect

now count in lead in/out and minus about .01GB for that, So by true size specifications, the accual amount of data that can be held onto a DVD is 4.36GB with lead in and out (for compatibility).

I hope this answered a few questions of why the disc is not being used to the full "4.7GB".

LONG RIP TIMES,THIS MIGHT BE YOUR PROBLEM..
Looks like your drive is in PIO mode. NOT IN DMA

Go to
My Computer
Control Panel
System
Hardware
Device Manager
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Open the installed IDE channels (Primary and Secondary)
Click on Advanced settings
You will see the transfer mode. If any are PIO you need to un-install the channel (right click and choose uninstall) and re-boot. Windows will reinstall the device and return it to DMA mode

Could be in PIO mode, check it with this:

Go to
My Computer
Control Panel
System
Hardware
Device Manager
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Open the installed IDE channels (Primary and Secondary)
Click on Advanced settings Pay close attention to step 9
You will see the transfer mode. If any are PIO you need to un-install the channel (right click on the channel and choose uninstall) and re-boot. Windows will reinstall the device and return it to DMA mode.
Be careful when using this procedure because if you have an older hard drive or storage device that does not support DMA you could corrupt your data.

"Out of Memory" Error Messages with Large Amounts of RAM Installed
View products that this article applies to.

If this article does not describe your hardware-related issue, please see the following Microsoft Web site to view more articles about hardware:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/topics/hardware/hwddresctr.asp
SYMPTOMS
If a computer that is running any of the versions of Windows that are listed above contains more than 512 megabytes (for example, 768 megabytes) of physical memory (RAM), you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

* You may be unable to open an MS-DOS session (or command prompt) while Windows is running. Attempts to do so may generate the following error message:
There is not enough memory available to run this program.
Quit one or more programs, and then try again.
* The computer may stop responding (hang) while Windows is starting, or halt and display the following error message:
Insufficient memory to initialize windows. Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove unnecessary utilities from your Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files, and restart your computer.

CAUSE
The Windows 32-bit protected-mode cache driver (Vcache) determines the maximum cache size based on the amount of RAM that is present when Windows starts. Vcache then reserves enough memory addresses to permit it to access a cache of the maximum size so that it can increase the cache to that size if needed. These addresses are allocated in a range of virtual addresses from 0xC0000000 through 0xFFFFFFFF (3 to 4 gigabytes) known as the system arena.

On computers with large amounts of RAM, the maximum cache size can be large enough that Vcache consumes all of the addresses in the system arena, leaving no virtual memory addresses available for other functions such as opening an MS-DOS prompt (creating a new virtual machine).
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:

* Use the MaxFileCache setting in the System.ini file to reduce the maximum amount of memory that Vcache uses to 512 megabytes (524,288 KB) or less. For additional information about how to use the MaxFileCache setting, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

108079 32-Bit File Access Maximum Cache Size
* Use the System Configuration utility to limit the amount of memory that Windows uses to 512 megabytes (MB) or less.For additional information about how to use the System Configuration utility, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

181966 System Configuration Utility Advanced Troubleshooting Settings
* Reduce the amount of memory that is installed in your computer to 512 MB or less.

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION
Vcache is limited internally to a maximum cache size of 800 MB.

This problem may occur more readily with Advanced Graphics Port (AGP) video adapters because the AGP aperture is also mapped to addresses in the system arena. For example, if Vcache is using a maximum cache size of 800 MB and an AGP video adapter has a 128-MB aperture mapped, there is very little address space remaining for the other system code and data that must occupy this range of virtual addresses.
The information in this article applies to:

* Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
* Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
* Microsoft Windows 98
* Microsoft Windows 95

What is a fatal exception error?
Windows generates an exception code when a program violates certain rules, such as when a program tries to get more memory than is currently available. Windows then sends this exception code back to the program that caused it. The program should then recognize the exception code and try to work with it. A fatal exception error occurs when the program fails to recognize or respond to the exception code.
Typical fatal exception error messages appear in white text on a blue background and state something similar to the following:
A Fatal Exception 06 has occurred at 0000:00000026
The first two numbers/letters, in this case 06, represent the type of exception that Windows sent back to a program.
The first four numbers/letters of the long number, in this case 0000, represent the instruction pointer.
The last set of eight numbers/letters is the actual memory address where the exception happened.
In summary, a fatal exception error is just an error being caused when a program does not respond after Windows tells the program it has done something wrong.
What is an invalid page fault?
Software programs have to set aside space within the computer's memory. Sometimes, they tell Windows exactly what memory addresses they want by using something called a pointer. When this pointer points to a section of memory that is not supposed to be used, then an invalid page fault occurs.
What is an illegal operation?
An illegal operation is a bad instruction sent to the computer's microprocessor. When a program does this, Windows brings up a screen that tells where the bad instruction occurred in the program's instruction list and what program committed the bad instruction.
What to do when an error occurs
1. If a CD or DVD was recently removed from a drive, then place it back in the drive it was removed from and close the drive door. Wait about 10 seconds.
2. Press ENTER to try to clear the error message. The program that was running should close automatically, and the system will return to the main screen.
3. If Windows reappears, then save any of your work that may still be open.
4. Close all other open programs if possible. If you are not sure if programs are open, do the following:
a. Press ALT + TAB. If a program is running, a window will appear briefly displaying the program name, and the program will open.
b. To close the program, click the X in the upper-right corner. A message may appear asking if you would like to save changes. Click Yes to save your work, or click No to close the program without saving your work.
c. Repeat this procedure until the system returns to the main screen. If you press ALT + TAB again, and a window does not appear, then all the programs are closed.
5. Click Start in the lower-left corner of the screen, then click Shut Down. Select Restart, and click OK. If this does not work, then wait one minute and press down on the computer's power button for five seconds or until it shuts off.
6. Windows should operate normally once the computer is started.

No69- -Preventing or reducing these system errors
There are many different causes for these errors.
o When running a program from the CD-ROM, make sure the compact disc is clean and unscratched. A dirty or scratched CD can cause errors.
o Increase the computer's system resources. System resources are how much memory, hard drive space, and processing power a computer has to work with. Use this HP support document on how to increase your computer's system resources <http://www.hp.com/cposupport/personal_computing/support_doc/bph06569.html> to reduce the chance of having system errors occur.
o Run a virus scan to find and remove viruses. Computer viruses can cause system errors.
o Remove or reinstall any programs recently installed. Some of the dynamic link library (.DLL) files may be damaged or corrupted.
o Verify that Windows is managing the virtual memory:
1. Click Start, Settings, and Control Panel.
2. Double-click the System icon.
3. On the Performance tab, click Virtual Memory.
4. If the setting Let Windows Manage My Virtual Memory is not checked, check it, and click OK.
o Verify that enough memory is available to run the program. To check the memory available on a computer, follow these instructions:
4. On the main screen, right-click My Computer (Figure 1), then select Properties to open a System Properties window.

Figure 1: Right-clicking the My Computer icon

2. Click the Performance tab. The information on this tab varies by computer model.
3. Under Performance Status, the amount of memory installed on the computer and the percentage of free memory is displayed.
4. If the amount of free memory is less than 30 percent, you may need to free system resources by closing open programs (including programs running in the background) on the system.
o If you determine that a particular program is causing the error, make sure the computer meets the minimum requirements to run the program. Computer specifications are found printed on the packaging, on the computer case, or can be found by right-clicking the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop and selecting Properties.
o Outdated and incompatible software may also cause error messages to appear. Software designed for Windows 95 may appear to run correctly in Windows Me but can give occasional system errors. Older software may no longer recognize the new codes and features that Windows Me may pass to the program.
Upgrade or replace the software. This also includes drivers for older hardware. Consult the manufacturers of these products for available upgrades or replacements.
o If the error message appears while reading from a CD-ROM drive, try turning off the CD-ROM drive cache. This may make the drive more reliable but may reduce performance. To turn off the CD-ROM drive cache, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, Settings, and Control Panel.
2. In the Control Panel window, double-click the System icon.
3. Click the Performance tab, and click File System.
4. Click the CD-ROM tab. In the Optimize Access Pattern For list, click No Read-Ahead.
5. Drag the Supplemental Cache Size slider to the left position (the "Small" setting), and click OK.
Figure 2: CD-ROM optimization screen

o The random access memory (RAM) module may be faulty. Replace the memory module (see the product's User's Guide for more information).

DIFF BETWEEN THE PLATINUM,4038 AND PLATINUM-RF

DIFF BETWEEN THE PLATINUM 4038 AND PLATINUM-RF-40415

The RF version of platinum is basically 4038 with ripper. It has the advantage of an activae browse button and that ugly 321 warning screen isn't there. It's only disadvantage is that is overcompresses on some DVD's.
and ye can copy movie files from ye hard drive...

WHAT IS A KERNEL32 ERROR?

According to Microsoft:

The KERNEL32.DLL file is a 32-bit dynamic link library file that is found in Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millenium Edition (ME). The KERNEL32.DLL file handles memory management, input/output operations, and interrupts. When you start Windows, KERNEL32.DLL is loaded into a protected memory space so that other programs do not take over that memory space.

On occasion, you may receive an invalid page fault (IPF) error message. This error message occurs when a program tries to access the KERNEL32.DLL protected memory space. Occasionally, the error message is caused by one particular program, and other times the error message is provoked by multiple files and programs.

If the problem results from running one program, the program needs to be replaced. If the problem occurs when you access multiple files and programs, the damage is likely caused by damaged hardware.

You may want to clean boot the computer to help you identify the particular third-party memory-resident software. Note that programs that are not memory-resident can also cause IPF error messages.

The following conditions can cause KERNEL32.DLL error messages:

* Damaged swap file
* File allocation damage
* Damaged password list
* Damaged or incorrect version of the KERNEL32.DLL file
* Damaged registry
* Hardware, hot CPU, over clocking, broken power supply, RF noise, ground bounce, or bad hard disk controller
* BIOS settings for Wait states, RAM timing, or other BIOS settings
* Third-party software that is damaged or incorrectly installed
* .DLL files that are saved to the desktop
* Non-existent or broken Temp folder
* A control panel (.CPL) file is damaged
* Incorrect or damaged hardware driver
* Incorrectly installed printer drivers or HP Jetadmin drivers
* Damaged Java Machine
* Damaged .LOG files
* Damaged entries in the History folder
* Incompatible or damaged dynamic link library files
* Viruses
* Damaged or incorrect MSINFO32.EXE file
* Low disk space
* Other problems that depend on the Kernel file

GENERIC KERNEL32.DLL ERROR CHECKLIST
by Richard G. Harper

In most cases, I still think the fastest diagnostic route for KERNEL32.DLL errors is to follow this checklist by MS-MVP Richard G. Harper:

1. BAD MEMORY MODULES. Try inserting the command DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:ON into your CONFIG.SYS file with the System Editing utility and watch your computer for a message “HIMEM has detected unreliable memory at address xxxxxxxxx” which will certainly indicate that there is a memory problem. It may take several reboots over a period of days for this to show up. You can also download diagnostic software from AMI, or DocMemory from SIMMTester.com, to test your system’s memory.

2. BAD VIDEO DRIVERS. Check with your video card manufacturer for an updated set of drivers. If they don’t have an update, check one of the driver sites here.

3. CPU, BUS SPEED OR MULTIPLIER OVER CLOCKING. DON’T!

4. FAULTY OR DIRTY COOLING FANS ON YOUR CPU OR POWER SUPPLY. The CPU fan can be cleaned with a small paintbrush and some compressed air. The power supply fan should be cleaned only by someone who is comfortable working around high voltage capacitor components. (If you are not sure if this is you — then trust me — it isn’t you.)

5. GRAPHIC ACCELERATION IS SET TOO HIGH. Right-click My Computer, select Properties, then the Performance tab, then the Graphics button. Turn down graphics acceleration a notch, reboot, try again. Repeat as necessary.

6. ANIMATED MOUSE CURSORS, MOUSE TRAILS, AND ACTIVE DESKTOP can also rarely cause these kinds of problems. Try disabling them all and re-adding one at a time until you find the culprit.

ANOTHER SOLUTION

The following has solved many people’s Windows Explorer KERNEL32.DLL crashes. It is from early Windows 95 days, and seems to work primarily on Win95, though I have had a couple of Win98 users say that it helped them, too.

In the root directory of C:\, modify or create a CONFIG.SYS file to include the following lines:

FILES=65
BUFFERS=40
STACKS=64,512

If the error persists, try adding this line to your SYSTEM.INI file in the [386Enh] section:

; Increases default stack pages from 2 to 6
MinSPs=6

(The default is 2. If required, increase by increments of 2 until you find a value that solves the problem. The ; [semicolon] works the same as REM works in AutoExec.bat.)

Click Edit, Save, Edit, exit. Shut down and restart for the changes to take effect.

Additionally, repeat KERNEL32.DLL errors can often be resolved by deleting your Windows swap file, WIN386.SWP, and letting it rebuild itself.

OTHER KERNEL32 TROUBLESHOOTING RESOURCES

* A helpful collection of KERNEL32 information from MS-MVP Svetlana Belacov’s web site.

* Another helpful collection, organized by the module causing the problem, is given on Henri Leboeuf’s page.

* Several specific KERNEL32-related error messages are discussed individually on this collection of Microsoft Knowledge Base articles. (Check especially the Invalid Page Fault or General Protection Fault subpages, depending on the type of error message you have; or use the “Search This Site” button to find all KERNEL32 references.)

* Search the Microsoft Knowledge Base for articles on KERNEL32 problems according to your operating system. Pick: Windows 95 Windows 98 Windows ME

To start the computer in safe mode
You should print these instructions before continuing. They will not be available after you shut your computer down in step 2.
Click Start, click Shut Down, and then, in the drop-down list, click Shut down.
In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click Restart, and then click OK.
When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8.
Use the arrow keys to highlight the appropriate safe mode option, and then press ENTER.
If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access using the arrow keys, and then press ENTER.
Note

In safe mode, you have access to only basic files and drivers (mouse, monitor, keyboard, mass storage, base video, default system services, and no network connections). You can choose the Safe Mode with Networking option, which loads all of the above files and drivers and the essential services and drivers to start networking, or you can choose the Safe Mode with Command Prompt option, which is exactly the same as safe mode except that a command prompt is started instead of the graphical user interface. You can also choose Last Known Good Configuration, which starts your computer using the registry information that was saved at the last shutdown.
Safe mode helps you diagnose problems. If a symptom does not reappear when you start in safe mode, you can eliminate the default settings and minimum device drivers as possible causes. If a newly added device or a changed driver is causing problems, you can use safe mode to remove the device or reverse the change.
There are circumstances where safe mode will not be able to help you, such as when Windows system files that are required to start the system are corrupted or damaged. In this case, the Recovery Console may help you.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/using/productdoc/en/default.asp?url=/WINDOWSXP/home/using/productdoc/en/boot_failsafe.asp

Starting XP in Safe Mode
Safe mode is a diagnostic startup environment that runs only a subset of the drivers and services that are in your system memory. Safe mode is useful when you install software or a device driver that causes instability or problems with starting in normal mode. In most cases, safe mode allows you to start Windows XP Professional and then troubleshoot problems that prevent startup.

Logging on to the computer in safe mode does not update the LastKnownGood control set. Therefore, if you log on to your computer in safe mode and then decide you want to try Last Known Good Configuration, the LastKnownGood control set is still available.

In safe mode, Windows XP Professional uses the minimum set required to start the graphical user interface (GUI). The following registry subkeys list the drivers and services that start in safe mode:

Safe mode
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal

Safe mode with networking
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Network

To access safe mode

Remove all floppy disks and CDs from your computer, and restart your computer.
Press F8 when prompted.
If Windows XP Professional starts without displaying the menu shown in Figure 28.4, restart your computer. Press F8 after the firmware POST process completes but before Windows XP Professional displays graphical output.

On the Windows Advanced Options menu, select Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, or Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
You can also select a safe mode option from the startup recovery menu that appears when Windows XP Professional detects that the startup attempt was unsuccessful. For more information about the startup recovery menu, see "Restoring to the Last Known Good Configuration" earlier in this chapter.

For more information about safe mode, see Windows XP Professional Help and Support Center and "Tools for Troubleshooting" in this book. Also see article 202485, "Description of Safe Boot Mode in Windows 2000," in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. To find this article, see the Microsoft Knowledge Base link on the Web Resources page at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/reskits/webresources.

If you're using Windows XP, add C:\Windows\Prefetch to the list of directories to empty periodically. This folder is probably full of prefetch directions for applications you no longer use (see Tip 077). You can safely remove these files; any files that are needed will be created again automatically.

NOTE:>>THERE IS NO Prefetch FOLDER IN WIN-2000<<

This is a read only data file, problems can be addressed in Solving 321 software problems .

Tier 2 tech assistance gave me a lengthy bulletin they had prepared. Seems that a number of popular software programs cause interference problems. They said the problem could crop up anytime; even after the program functioning well for an extended period.

A word of warning, try turning off programs before going through Add-Remove to remove permanently.

Here is the bulletin:

The following programs can cause problems while using 321 software:
1. B's Clip:
This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start Windows. You will need to uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs, then reboot to remove it.
For more information, visit the B's website at http://www.bhacorp.com.

2. Direct CD or Drag to Disk:
These are applications from Easy CD Creator from Roxio. This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start Windows. To remove them you need to go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. There you can select Easy CD Creator to Change - not Remove. Then you click next until it gives you the option to Modify. Then either Direct CD or Drag to Disk should be selected and changed to "make this option not available". Then click Next. While the program may look like it is installing, it is actually removing those options.
For more information, please visit Roxio's website at http://www.roxio.com/en/support.index.jhtml

3. GoBack:
This is backup software that constantly runs in the background (Terminate and Stay Ready) which not only needs to be turned off, but disabled. Unfortunately, this may cause some restore points to vanish, but it will free up a lot of hard drive space.
For more information visit Symantec's web site for GoBack at http://www.symantec.com/goback/index.html

4. DLA: Also HP-DLA, Veritas DLA, and others.
DLA stands for Disk Letter Assignment.

5. InCD:
This is packet writing software that comes bundled with Ahead Nero Burning Rom.
For more information go to Nero's website at http://www.nero.com/en/

6. Interactual Player and PC Friendly Player:
These programs are DVD software viewers that often come on DVD movie discs, and will try to install themselves everytime you watch a movie on your computer. Please make sure to NOT let these install. Both programs interfere with all 321 Studios software and should be un-installed from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel when found. In some cases, you will need to uninstall and reinstall our software to restore functionality after removing one of these.
For more information about both players, visit http://player.interactual.com/

7. McAfee Anti-Virus:
This is anti-virus software that when running, can cause errors. It needs to be disabled by right clicking on the icon in the lower right side of the task bar. The 321 Studios software then needs to be restarted. Whenever you are using our software, McAfee needs to be disabled to ensure unrestricted access to your drive.
For more info go to McAfee's website at http://us.mcafee.com/default.asp

8. Norton Anti-Virus:
This is anti-virus software that when running, can cause errors. It needs to be disabled by right clicking on the icon in the lower right side of the task bar and the automatic updates should be disabled. The 321 Studios software then needs to be restarted. Whenever you are using our software, Norton needs to be disabled to ensure unrestricted access to your drive.
The Norton Website is http://www.symantec.com/

9. StopZilla:
StopZilla can hinder required portions of our installer, causing the software to fail. Please completely disable StopZilla, then install our software. Once our software is installed, you may safely enable it again. If you have any difficulty using our software at a later time, you may need to disable StopZilla before going to use our software. Uninstallation is not required.

10. MyStorageGuard:
This backup software can hinder certain required files from being copied during the installation. Please disable this program before installing our software, and have it disabled any time you go to use our software. Uninstallation is not required.

11. Napster 2.0:
This software includes some basic burning software that can cause burning problems if it is running. You will need to close this program completely before trying to use our software. In some rare cases, you will need to completely uninstall this package to attain full reliability, so if disabling does not solve your issue, please try uninstalling this software, and try again.

12. Easy CD Creator 4.x:
Due to the age of this package, it is no longer updated by the authors. There are bugs present in this older system that will cause NUMEROUS problems on your machine, not just with our software. Please Uninstall completely, and consider either the new 6.x version from Roxio (http://www.roxio.com) or Nero 6.x (http://www.nero.com). These packages, installed without the Packet Writing software (DirectCD/Drag to Disk/InCD), all work very well together with our software.

13. NTI FileCD:
This program has packet writing software installed with it. This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start windows. You will need to uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs, then reboot twice to fully remove it.
For more information go to NTI FileCD's Product page at http://www.ntius.com/default.asp?p=cdmaker/filecd_main

Spyware and Adware -
some programs can install other software that can be damaging to your Operating System. Please scan for these programs with a Spyware utility. We recommend Ad-aware, available freely at www.lavasoftusa.com
If you perform any of these changes, you may need to uninstall our software, then re-install to fix any damage left. If you find some of these packages, please shut down and reboot twice to ensure that the last pieces of the conflicting software are completely removed.

Every version of windows requires updates.
These updates correct a multitude of problems that are found, on many levels.
To be sure your system is completely up to date go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
If you are using Windows XP please visit http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/default.asp
If you are using Windows 2000 please visit http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/default.asp
You will also want to update your Direct X control to insure full functionality of any of our programs. You will want to download, and install Direct X 9 from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/downloads

Certain programs running in the background can use system resources and cause our software to experience burning issues.
To disable your start up group go to start, run, and type in msconfig and hit enter, then click on the startup tab.
Windows XP(Home & Pro):
If you are running Windows XP you will click the disable all button.
Windows Me:
If you are running Windows Me disable all items that are not Windows system processes.
Windows 98:
If you are running Windows 98 disable all items except for Systray, Explorer and Scanreg.
Windows 2000:
Windows 2000 does not have this utility please make sure to close all programs through your system tray.

Please update your ASPI software by installing the software at this link:
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.jsp?language=English+US&cat=%2fProduct%2fASPI-4.70&filekey=aspi_471a2.exe&sess=no
Follow the instructions carefully, and make sure to reboot afterwards.

Make sure you have the latest firmware update for your writer by visiting the manufacturer's website. Due to legal issues we cannot provide links for you. If you cannot find any update on their website it is recommended to contact them by phone to make sure your firmware is up to date.

PER JAYBO VSO 1.24

The problem is this, Platinum has not been kept up to date, neither has express, or DVDXCopy v1.52. However copy protection has. My suggestion is this dump whatever version of the Patin Couffin engine you have installed from the software file folder. Go to VSO's website and download and install the trial copy of Blind Write, it has the latest PC Setup V1.24. Even when the trial version runs out the PC v1.24 will still work with platinum.

No problem. I also just found out the freeware at vso site called vso-inspector also has the 1.27 update drivers in it. It is freeware so will not run out of time. It is a smaller download as well. It will most likely be updated with new drivers as they become available.

Device Manager appearance for the HP DVD Movie Writer

To Launch the Device Manager, go to Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manger.

Please note that when the HP DVD Movie Writer is properly installed, you should see two devices.

1. Under DVD/CD-ROM drives you should see:

* an HP DVD 300n (or 300c) USB Device for the dc3000
* an HP DVD 420n USB Device for the dc4000
* an HP DVD 630c USB Device for the dc5000

2. Under the Sound, video, and game controllers, you should see:

* an HP DVD Movie Writer dc3000 if you installed the software that came with the dc3000
* an HP DVD Movie Writer dc3000/4000 if you have installed or upgraded to the dc4000 software
* simply an HP DVD Movie Writer if you have installed or upgraded to the dc5000 software

The device shown under the Sound, video and game controller is the part of the Movie Writer that captures the audio and video. The drive portion should appear without any software being installed. The HP DVD Movie Writer portion only appears properly after its driver is installed when you install the rest of the software from the installation CD. Otherwise, it will have a yellow exclamation point indicating that its driver is missing. A yellow exclamation point could indicate a number of other issues too, including USB or hardware problems.
