What is the differance between all of these? What is the best to use to back up your dvd's nad is there any benefit to one over the other?

giro,
It sounds like your getting ready to take the plunge into DVD's.
The plus and the minus formats are waging a battle for control of the "standard" and as of now no one has really won.
R = Record once and it's permanent (Read only).
RW = Re Writable - they can be written many times.
Do a search on the internet for DVD R or DVD RW and you'll find many sites that talk about them.
