DVDXPRESS 3.02 and DVDXCOPY worked fine for me: Vivastar DVD+ recorder, windows xp, pent.4, 1.3ghz. BUT Platinum does NOT! I uninstalled xpress 3 and xcopy then installed platinum, id number and password work. Platinum won't. platinum tells me to place a blank dvd into the recorder befor it copies the actual dvd. nothing works in the advanced tab. Set up reconizes "YYYY" as my dvd recorder and none of the other items work. I uninstalled dvdxcopy platinum and reinstalled dvdexpress 3 and it works ok, also dvd rescue looks like it might work although I haven't tried it. For me dvdxcopy platinum doesn't work!

using advance mode... when reading finished the burn window remains grayed out..
Tried again using simple mode, the burn screen appeared after 1 min, and remained grayed out..
This was on a machine with no other copying software installed..
WindowsXP Pro +SP1
Intel P4 2.8 CPU
512 Mem
120gig ATA serial H/D
using a Pioneer A06 dual Burner
Media inserted was Verbatim + RW for 1st try
then Pioneer -R for 2nd try..but again with out the burn option, it might as well been a dinner plate :)

I also am having the problem of just a black screen when I hit the preview movie button on the advanced option. Also, I have 2 dvd recorders on my system, but the options shown under 'select dvd burner' are just 2 rows that look like this 'yyyy', with little dots above the y's. I have gone to the drive select option and picked out the drive I want to use, but it doesn't seem to keep my choice in the program. My browse button on the first screen of plat is grayed out, I imagine this option is something planned for the future. and could someone tell me how to get back to the main screen without having to click on the advance button again??? the manuvering around in the program is awful. I have been very happy with previous 321 products and hope they get it together with plat.

well i just got the platinum release a few secs ago and the whole thing is messed up
1st when i 1st start it it says it couldnt read my dvd burner drive and for me to select a drive.
when i got the app up it seems the main window doesnt seem to load up, cause all i see r the buttons to the left, no logo, just one grey area.
then when i do click on advance mode i see most of the stuff shaded
i can see the titles but it only seems to let me preview it, nothing more then that.
then when i went to simple mode and try it that way
i put in a dvd movie and it looks like it was about to start reading the disc and then after like 1 sec it asks for the blank dvd.
i think this was put out way to early, has to damn many bugs. any help u guys can give me on how to get this to work would be very much appreciated.

I've got the same issue as everyone else - Platinum reads the disc ok, but won't burn anything (the boxes are greyed out). I've got a Sony External 500 ULX using USB 2.0.
DXC and Express have worked fine.

Pantera,
The main screen is just a grey screen with a few buttons. I am sure this will be changed in the near future.
In the advanced mode you need to select which titlesets to copy. To select a title click on the gray box to the right of the + sign. Once at least one title is selected, the Write tab will turn blue to allow you to start the copy.
If you select enough titles to go over the limit set for a DVD blank (4.something GB) the compression tab will turn blue and the Use Compression selection will enable. By clicking the Compression tab you can change how much each title is compressed. If you disable compression (clear the Use Compression box) the tab will read Splitting. Clicking on it will allow you to modify how the copy will be split over two blanks.
The Simple mode seems to work with some DVDs and others act like you indicate. For those movies I just use the advanced mode and select all the titlesets (or use the stand alone version of Xpress).
BTW, in my case the preview function does not work (just a black screen) so I cannot tell what each titleset is. I also agree with you, and others, Platinum needed more beta testing before release.

I Am totally dismayed... I was shocked to find that I too have problems with platinum <g>. This is the very first time that I have installed a 321 product that did not work.. Oh woe is me... I have never had a problem installing and running xcopy or xpress (with the exception of a movie like Red October, which was corrected with a later version) So imagine my suprise when Platinum didn't work.. the simple option seems like its fine until you actually begin the process and then it just goes imediately right to the "successful burn" message, but nothing happened. The advanced process just looks odd, most of the buttons stay greyed out and then crashes. No the DVD rescue was a different.. BRAVO, my original MATRIX disc looks fine (no scratches) but dies in the chair scene in the WHITE AREA. DVD Rescue made a copy that only blipped with a one second show of pixelation and went on with out stopping HURRAH for DVD rescue. Shoot lightning storm coming i gotta bail.

After 2 days trying....
The Program doesnot install properly.
Drive selector doesnt give any optional drives.
Many program buttons(options) do not work.
Rescue does not work.
I think by now i intstalled it over 12 times (within 28 hours, also cleaned registry, created restore points in XP etc)
Yesterday it seemed to be able to actually burn something, said: Succesfully burned. but the disk gave Invalid file format.
Second time it burned within 2 minutes, and said: Succesfully burned.
After reinstalling more problems, and so on.
later that day:
=========
I used simple mode
it did read the disk, after reading i put a disk in it (dvd+ r)
after 5 secs it said: Complete en FREEEEEEEEZE...
i used again platinum menu and wanted advanced mode
could not select "browse hd" but okay.. never mind..
so i choose next for splitting option because i don't want any thing lost.
YEs he starts reading, finished, FIRST DISK (DVD+RW, yes i learn)..
and he burned.. 1 disk ready, 2 disk... FREEEEEEEZEEEEEEEE
The freeze is there still after half hour.
REBOOT, because also my windows did not do anything.
First disk did play...-> BUT WHERE IS THE MENU..? SPLITING IS THAT YOU KEEP IT ALL EXACTLY THE SAME isn't it..?
The program doesnot seem to work well on my system. (all the not optional buttons??, freezing..?)
The writer is okay, i already wrote 2 dvd's (with some other programs)
But i realy want is the splitting option. (i don;t want to lose any thing, spec. features and menu-items, and i don't want to lose quality.
please help.
i'm getting pretty desperate, and sorry for the language that seem not the right words, i am dutch i "writing" is a bit difficult at the moment... ;-)

Hey, 321_Q/A - A little more info to pass on to the tech guys.
Like several others here, I have a problem using the Preview function in Platinum. If I select a title set, and try to preview, the preview window opens and stays black. The disk light flickers like it's reading, but no image. There's no "Stop" button on the preview window, and if you close the preview window, Platinum locks up and has to be closed from Windows task manager. This happens when the original is in my DVD-ROM and when it's in my Sony DRU-500a burner. I uninstalled DVDXCopy, Express, and Platinum, restarted, and reinstalled Platinum - no change. I also updated my NVidia drivers to the current ones (45.32) - no effect. Just to check options, I dropped resolution from 1280x1024 down to 800x600, and color depth from 32 bit to 16 bit - also no change. Did some experimenting with quality vs performance settings in my video drivers (my defaults were set for maximum image quality) - also no effect. I'm on an Athlon 1800+ processor, 1 GB memory, GeForce 4 video card. Also have Roxio 6, Nero 6, PowerDVD, WinDVD, and NVDVD installed.
On the plus side, I did a burn of Lord of the Rings - Two Towers (without previewing) from the Advanced seting - let it compress to one disk. Burned to a DVD+RW (whenever I try a new configuration, I use RW). Took about 26 minutes to read and compress, and 21 minutes to burn. That's pretty much what I got on the other versions. Burned without errors. Played fine on my DVD-ROM drive under PowerDVD. Now playing on my cheapie Shinsonic set top on TV. Been playing for about 30 minutes now, and so far, it looks and sounds fine - the compression's not bad at all.

Misc. Information Dept.
About USB... I bought a new DVD R/RW drive and installed it in an "External Box." With a USB-2 connection. This is supposed to allow me to move drives from one computer to another as well as reduce the loading on the box's power supply. The combo worked fine for transferring files, watching DVDs with two different players, etc.
It bombed when I tried it with several different versions of DVD X Copy and Express as well as Platinum. Things seemed to be going OK (for a couple of minutes, or so), then everything locked up. I had to use the task Mgr. to shut down the program. This happened during the read (from the USB drive) as well as during a burn. "Good time" until failure was as short as 1 minute and as long as 13 minutes.
I checked into it and found that although USB-2 is fast, it isn't consistent. (I also heard that 1394 Firewire is a little slower but has a consistent throughput speed. I haven't tried Firewire, yet.) I believe that there are timing issues in these programs that cause the failures.
I suspect that there will be problems reading from or writing to external USB drives.

do you have more info on express not being in plat. the reason i ask is when i use simple mode. my zone alarm tells me two programs are checking for updates ..one is plat ..the other is ..express. then after that if i hit control/alt/delte i see express running
and plat too...is that ok? or no?
it must be built in. i never loaded 3.0 so it came from somewhere.
hints ...tips...any one ...?

When I select Simple it does appear to use Express, it even says Express. The only difference I see is that it doesn't have the Check For Updates button the stand alone Express has so I assume it auto checks for updates.

goodforu,
Would you mind telling me exactly how you managed to back up Family Guy disc 4 to one disc with Platinum? This is one job I've been waiting a long time to complete and I was sorely disappointed to find that Platinum had not solved the 99% problem. I'd appreciate any help you can give me on this.

Sure, I put the disc in and selected Advanced. Then all I did was select the Title Set that has the Seven Chapters (that title set also has a smaller one in there, which is the menu, so that's eight I guess). Then I hit NEXT, then didn't change anyting on the next pasge and started to read. When all was said and done, it played great, had the menus and everything, just not the bonus features which were mainly just Fox ads for the show and sketches anyway. Let me know if that helps.

I tried everything I had 99% issues with and that method worked for every one of them.
Family Guy Season Two, Disc 4
Simpsons Season Three Discs 2 and 4
The Monkees Season One Disc 6
Sopranos Season One Disc One
Dual Xeon 3.0
120 7200 Western Digital (with the 8MB buffer thingy)
1.5 MB DDR
16x DVD Rom
4x Pioneer DVR-105
Win XP Pro, SP1
No anti virus, no nero, nothing but Windows and 321 stuff.

OK, after some free time to play around, I uninstalled platinum-but not rescue. then I installed dvdxpress 3.02, recorded a movie to make sure it still worked. Then I reinstalled platinum, not uninstalling xpressthis time. I tried a movie in platinum--"simple" worked for a standard movie(panic room). "Advanced" showed title sets--preview was black screen, had to Xout top right corner to exit. "Compresion" worked, but could not preview any title sets to see what I didn't want. Tried a chapter movie(the world at war) "simple" started to read for about 6 seconds then said insert a blank disc.---no good. "Advanced" showed the title sets--again no preview. compresion worked. Read the complete dvd. all I can say is maybe I should not have uninstalled dvdcopy and xpress first. It seems that the preview needs a fix(big time)

Im having the same problem with platinum that I had with the last 2 versions of xpress. It will extract the dvd fine and even burn but when i go to watch the movie i get "Invalid file format". Ive talked with mods about this before and was told that it was most likely a software problem because all previous versions of xpress and xcopy worked for me. I have an hp 200i dvd burner using memorex dvd+r disks. Will 321 please fix this annoying problem?

Even though I got it to work, without being able to edit audio it is certainly not a huge improvement over Express and even though I got it working I am still not in love with it as I thought I would be. Right now in it's current state, the main feature is that instead of losing a lot of quality as we did in Express using Entire Disk mode, we can now get a longer movie with the languages and commentary and DTS onto one disc but by dumping the deleted scenes, featuretes, and previews. This gets us extra room for less compression but nowhere near the extra room we will get when we can dump foreign languages we don't need.

Ok, I'm back.. lightning storm has passed...
Several people have said something resembling the following.
---->Why did 321 even bother to release this when it's obvious it isn't working correctly. Even if some people are able to do backups not all the features are working the way they're supposed to. -----------------------
Well, here is my 2 cents about that..
First off, I doubt the program is really buggy, though it does seem to be sensitive. MANY folks here have downloaded other 321 products and lots of us have had no problems while other were frustrated to the point of anger. I doubt 321 is sending some of us good programs and sending crap to the rest, we're all getting the same program files. Like I mentioned in previous posts.. Platinum is the first 321 product that has given me problems. Xpress and Xcopy still work fine for me so my machine hasn't changed. There are some folks here who seem to be having few or no problems with platinum yet may have had problems with the other programs.. So, Yeah there are some strange sensitivities from machine to machine but I think 321 will work them out.
2nd... Why did 321 release it now ? well mabye because it works fine for them and the beta testers and therfore had no reason not to release it.. Maybe because some folks have been hounding them to release it ASAP. So far I think 321 has done an admirable job of following thru on their promises since the early days of X copy and they are working under unimaginable pressure over thier heads everyday, with this court battle still ongoing. I have faith in 321 and am sure they will continue to work on this program.
3rd... If I remember correctly, didn't they say that they would be adding to the features in further updates, so the buttons may be there but not yet active.. Maybe someone close to 321 can elaborate on that again?
Yeah its a pain in the butt when a program dosen't work right and to have to futz with it to get it working, but lets give 321 a chance and give them kudos for the previous products

Based on my experience and what I'm reading here I'm going to make a guess about what is wrong with Platinum. A theory really and please post if you can refute it.
Platinum does not work on ANY external DVD burner. Reads OK but does not burn. Happens every time with any disk. ANY make ANY model with USB or firewire interface. I am sure that Platinum does not work on my Backpack external DVD (which is a NEC1100A). Used to work fine with Xpress 2.5.2
If there is anyone out there with an external DVD writer and Platinum is working, let us know. Model number please.
I'm sure those with internal DVD drives are having other problems, but it seems clear that many people with external drives are having the "burn successful" but did not burn problem.
Me:
Backpack DVD (NEC 1100A)w USB 2 I/F
Windows XP SP1

Ripping times compared...
First of all Platinum will not burn a disk for me, and I have most of the problems with it that others are experiencening.
Rip Times for whole movie "101 Dalmations II"
Uncompressed size: 4.68Gig
Platinum Advanced: Time 12:42 - File Size 4.46Gig - Won't burn, stays at "Please Insert Blank Burn Media" until you close it down.
Platinum Simple: Runs for 6 sec and ask for disk to burn.
Xpress 3.02: Time 12:10 - File Size 3.53Gig - Burn OK
Freeware Product: Time 12:55 File Size 4.45Gig - Burn OK
