upgrade from 2.4 to 4x speed?

hey all i have a phillips d/228 it was made and sold at 2.4 dvd speed. there is a firmware upgrade making it compatible with 4x my question = if i get the new firm ware does it realy increase my speed or does it just make it compatible with that speed media ?

I don't own that drive but I would assume the latter of your post,compatible.HP had the same for the 200i sometime back.Do some searching here as you will find many posts which suggest to back-up at slower speed.Speed Kills

The firmware upgrade on "2nd generation" dvd burners will allow you to burn 4x media safely, but does NOT give you 4x speed. I just upgraded the firmware on my Sony DRU-120A and the Sony website says that this will let me use 4x media in my drive. Be aware that most manufacturers are discontinuing the 2.4x media and thats the reason for the firmware upgrades.

i think 2.4 is perfect for me . ANOTHER QUESTION since 2.4 may go away i will be able to use 4x at 2.4 speed correct? and may i ask if dvx or plat has/will the speed control feature for burning? THANKS ALL
