I can't get a clean install on Dell D800 (Win2000). I get the Blue Screen on the restart step. Not sure what the cause is but

I believe it's related to "Gear" driver. Once I get backup on last Good Config, I do have DVD Copy but the burner is not recognized. I have a Sony DRX-500ULX.

Any help would be great. I've called support and they send my to MicroSoft. I'm not getting much help their either. I've gone to Gear folks and they send me back to Studio support. This is a real runaround.

We'll try and help you, but you need to help us also. Could you please list your system specs as follows:
1. Version of DVDXCopy and/or Version of DVDXCopy Express.
2. Devices, hard drives, ROM drives,USB/firewire devices.
3. Memory installed.
4. Hard drive sizes.
5. Service pack version for Win2000.
6. List each one of your burning software programs if you have any.An example would be Veritas DLA, or Roxio easy CD etc.

There may be more questions about your system, but we'll start here.

jfc,

A couple of questions. Ok, maybe 3 or 4 or 7.
1. Does DVDXCopy Express work?
2. Do you have the DLA software that came with your drive installed?
3. When the blue screen shows up is your drive connected USB or firewire?
4.Is your drive powered on before, during, and after installation?
5. From the Dell site: "Dell D/Bay (one) USB 2.0 connector for use with Dell D/Bay external media module" Is this the port that you're using?
6. RecordNow DX is a burning software program that's also included with your drive. Have you tried to burn anything onto a DVD RW as a test?
7. What makes you think it's related to the Gear driver?
Sorry about all those questions, but believe me they need to be asked.

No problem. I'm just glad someone is helping.
Answers:

1. DVDX Express does not work. It provides a message after 15 minutes. Thread issue
2. I've installed with and with DLA software loaded. Currently uninstalled.
3. Blue screen shows up with USB and Firewire.
4. DVD drive is powered on
5. Not sure will check Dell site.
6. Yes and it works.
7. I read forum and saw where someone using this Sony drive downloaded Gear upgrade and worked. I downloaded and installed only this driver and on the reboot I get same affect (blue screen)

Keep asking questions and I'll check Dell site for 5th question.

Q's again:
1. The Sony shows up in device manager with no problems?
2. The Sony shows up in Windows Explorer with a drive letter assignment?
3. 321's support staff sent you to Microsoft for a solution. Did 321 support indicate to you what the problem was with your system?
4. I don't have Win2000, but in XP there's administration/event viewer in control panel and it lists errors for both application and system. Maybe someone else with Win2000 could answer this. If you find the event viewer could you list the errors related to the installation.
5. Do you have Roxio or Nero installed?
6. You said:"DVDX Express does not work. It provides a message after 15 minutes. Thread issue"
What is Express doing in the mean time? Are you trying to read/burn a DVD?

Just some footnotes to get on the same page:
If 321 support did not suggest loading ASPI get it here:
http://support.321studios.com/faq/KBSearch.asp?s=ID&i=1220
and follow directions for installation.

Make sure your Dell has the lastest bios installed and you can get that off their site.

Make sure your Sony has the latest firmware and you can get that off their site.

2. Get a letter assignment
3. Not much from 321...said it was MS problem.
4.Checked the viewer. Only message with Mass storage: Can not open CD-R interface. Selected
Interface type not supported.
5. No Roxio or Nero (Do I need?)
6. I'm burning and it seems to be ready DVD
Note: the X Copy does the same thing.

I had already installed ASPI V471 but I update with V46 per your link. Same result.

Dell OK and I update Sony firmware per there instructions

I don't understand something.
You said: "6. I'm burning and it seems to be ready DVD
Note: the X Copy does the same thing."

Are you actually burning somehting on to a DVD using DVDXCopy and Express?

answer 6.
The results are similiar when I try to copy with X copy or Express. The program seems to go into a reading mode but then when you would expect it ask for DVD to write it fails.

Here's your quote:
"I can't get a clean install on Dell D800 (Win2000). I get the Blue Screen on the restart step."
Let's back up a lot of steps here. So you ARE getting a GOOD installation of DVDXCopy and Express. You ARE getting both those programs to read a DVD. You're not able to get those 2 programs to burn. Am I correct? If I am what is this "Blue Screen" thing?

The message from your event viewer: "Cannot open CD-R interface. Selected Interface type not supported." is where the problem is. I just want to make sure now that you're actually getting the software to install and at least read a DVD.

OK
I can read from DVD and software opens but part of it fails. I get the blue screen when I install DVD X Copy, DVD Express or reload Gear.

I'm not sure I follow so what do you think I need to do?

jfc,
Let's try this so we understand what happens when you try to install DVDXCopy ONLY.
1. Uninstall DVDXCopy 1.52 from your ADD/REMOVE section in Control Panel.
2. Reboot
3. Uninstall DVDXCopy Express from your ADD/REMOVE section in Control Panel.
4. Reboot
5. Go into Windows Explorer and under Program Files delete the entire 321 folder.
6. Go into device manager and uninstall the VSO item if it's still listed.
7. Reboot and run Scandisk (in Windows 2000 I think it's called 'Check this volume for errors'). Right click on the C:\ drive -> properties -> tools. Defrag your drive if you haven't done so in the last week. If you haven't done this before just ask.
8. If you have some type of registry checker use it. I use Win Doctor in Nortons System Works.
9. Reboot and install ForceASPI 4.6 from this site: http://support.321studios.com/faq/faqsupport.asp?Function=Question&ID=1220&CatID=9999 and follow directions exactly.
10. Unplug your Sony.
11. Go to Start -> run and type in: msconfig and hit enter.
12. Go to the "Start up items" tab and uncheck everthing that's in there.
13. Reboot.
14. Get your pencil and a piece of paper.
15. Install DVDXCopy version 1.5.2
16. If prompted to install drivers click Yes.
17. Write down anything unusual that happens.
18. Reboot
19 Write down exactly what happens on the reboot.
20. If nothing unusual happens, plug your Sony in and make sure Windows recognizes it.
21. Go into Windows Explorer -> Program Files -> 321 folder and find the file named: DVDXCopyInstaller.exe and click on it.
22. Write down everything that happens.
23. Reboot and again write down anything that happens.
24. You can at this time re enable the items in the Start up tab of msconfig, but we're trying to find out if something in your start up's is causing this Blue Screen thing.

Post back with your results.

Here it goes:
Uninstalled and rebooted
Installed DVD X Copy
Pop window "Gearworks Drivers installed"
"would you like to shortcut on destop"
"reboot computer"
Get Blue Screen during restart
"KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED"
Force a shut down.
Power UP and hold F8
Select Last Known Good Configuration
(only way to bypass blue screen)
Able to reboot this way.
Went to Program folder/321 folder
selected DVDCopyinstaller
Get Pop Window " Configure DVD Xcopy"
selected "Remove driver"
Got error message attempting to remove Gearworks driver. That I have a corrupt installation of GearWorks Drivers.

When I reloaded drivers and rebooted I went back to Blue Screen.

If I haven't said it lately " Thanks a bunch "

jfc,
I really, REALLY, think we're getting somewhere.
So far we know:
1. You have something on your system that's corrupting the gear drivers.
2.The errors: "Can not open CD-R interface. Selected Interface type not supported." And
"KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED" provided a wealth of info. Thank you!

Here's what we're going to do now.
1. Do you have Nero on your system?
2. Do you have Easy CD creator and/or Direct CD installed on your system?
3. Make sure your search function is set to show/find hidden files/system files.
4. Search you whole system for a file named: cdr4_2k.sys and post your results.
5. Search your whole system for a file named: Newgina.dll and post your results.

Thanks,

jfc,
Go to:
https://support.dell.com/register.aspx
Select your system Latitude D800
Either search for: KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
or article: TT1036558

Make sure you are in the instructions for:

"How do I resolve a Stop error that may occur when I boot to Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Safe Mode on my system with Adaptec Easy CD Creator and DirectCD installed?"
And the article number is: TT1036558

1.Follow the first 11 steps only on that page to Disable the CDR4_2K.SYS Driver.
2. Delete both the CDR4_2K.SYS files that you found on your system.

After that is done I would strongly suggest that you reinstall ForceAspi 4.6 from the 321 support page link.
I also would strongly suggest that you reinstall Windows 2000 sp3 right over the top of your existing sp3 from this site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp3/default.asp

Good News & Bad

I did all the steps and at the end I reinstalled the DVD X Copy drivers and Rebooted without a problem or Blue Screen ( Great !)

But...when I went to use or my CD or DVD niether one shows up in Explorer. I see them in device manager and they are set to enabled. The window in properties says:

A driver for this device was not required, and has been disabled. (Code 32)

Click Troubleshooter to start the troubleshooter for this device.

jfc,
We're almost there.

Go here and follow directions exactly:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;270008

After the procedure is completed you have two choices.
1. (Suggested)Uninstall DVDXCopy, reboot, reinstall DVDXCopy and make sure the drivers install.
2. Go back into the 321 folder and click on: DVDXCopyInstaller.exe

Let us know how it goes.

I'm starting to believe in the promise land.

Followed all the steps including suggested method for re-installing DVD X Copy.

I'm in the burn phase of my first DVD. I may be jumping the gun but I'm excited to get this far. I'll post the conclusion later when I try to play it on my home DVD.

Could not have gone this far without you. Thanks a bunch.

I'm glad we got you up and running and thanks for persevering through all of that.

If they play in Power DVD then most likely that brand of media and your players don't like each other. What stand alone players do you have and what brand of media are you using?

I'm using FujiFilm DVD+R. I have an Apex and GoVideo DVD player. I have been able to copy a few that work on the GoVideo unit with DVD X Copy.

The copies I've made with X Copy Express seem to only copy the begining segment with Protection cluase then they stop.

Any ideas.
