I purchased both programs at the same time but installed and used DXC 1.5.2 first for about a week. It made backups just fine. However, after I installed Nero 5.5.10.20, DXC started hanging after writing for 3-10 minutes. I switched to the External Nero option rather than Gear and it would successfully burn, but the new backup wouldn't play in my standalone dvd player, while the successful Gear ones all did. I uninstalled and reinstalled DXC but it made no difference. I've been using the same media throughout so I've ruled it out as causing any problems.
I'm using a new Sony DRU-500AX and WinXP Home.
My hard drive went bad a week or so after the problem started (not related to this issue), and I've installed a new hd and reinstalled DXC 1.5.2 and am buring successfully. I'd like to install Nero again but I'm afraid the same thing will start again. I've seen one thread about this that is a few months old, but there was no solution posted. Has anyone else seen this or solved it?
Thanks,
Dave

Many, many people have lost compatibility when they upgraded to Nero 5.5.10.20. Nero 5.5.10.7b works best with DXC.
Gear has always worked better with DXC than Nero. If you are getting successful burns with Gear, why worry about Nero?

Do you know if previous Nero versions are available to download, like 5.5.10.7b? I only see the current version on their site (unless I'm missing something), which I am a little leary of until I hear some reports.
I was using Nero for some other things and would like to put it back on, if I can get a version that plays happy with DXC.

You can get older versions of Nero off eBay

I've sent the Nero people a support e-mail. I was hoping I could download older versions from their website but I don't see where you can. And I don't know if my serial number, which I got when I bought 5.5.10.20, would work with an older version like 5.5.10.7b or not.
I see there are newer versions of Nero out since 5.5.10.20 I can upgrade to. Has anyone with this problem tried the newest version of Nero to see if it helps or not?

I'm using Nero 5.5.10.35 with DVDXCopy 1.5.2.
I'm still unable to burn with Nero and get a copy which will play in my Sony NV655P DVD player. Gear works fine, so I just keep using it.

KhelAfter,
If Gear works, I'd stick with that. I have Nero 5.5.10.35 on my XP machine, but I burn with Gear for the better compatibility. I have no problems w DVDxCOY 1.5.2 or Xpress 2.5
Therefore if you need Nero, for other reasons, try the latest version. Create an XP restore point prior to the install, that way you can roll back the changes if you need to.

mwillett,
Gear quit working when I installed Nero. That's what started my problem. Making a restore point and trying it out is a great idea tho. Thanks.
