I just discovered that this drive has a problem reading some DVD's. After trying for days to isolate why this drive of mine would not read a couple of DVD's (error reading title set, error reading sectors, or simply just hanging) I found that this drive has a problem. These particular DVD's would play(read) in the Sony DRU500AX burner, in very picky stand alone players and in any software player I had, but not the Liteon. Thinking it was a defective drive, I obtained 2 more of the same drives for testing and they both did the same thing. I moved the drive to master and to slave on both IDE cables. I tried 40 wire IDE cable and 80 wire IDE cable and still the same problem with all 3 drives. I did not try and change DMA to PIO to see if that corrected it as it would affect the other drive on that cable.
So, to reinterate what 321_Q/A says: "something, something, something.... and use your burner to read the DVD and sometimes that will correct the problem"

Thanks

The problem movies with the Liteon 166 were Human Nature (only the full screen version, wide screen version read fine) and Dead Poets Society. The originals would play in Software players WinDVD, PowerDVD, and ATI DVD using the Sony DRU 500AX. They would play in stand alones Sony 655, Sony 315 and a very picky Sony AVD-S50ES. Using the lite0n to read would fail. These two movies were the only ones to fail with the liteon out of probably 100. And, as I mentioned, they also failed in two other brand new liteon's. That's why I went through all that switching of master/slave and the IDE cables to see if was my system. It still may be my system, but I don't have a clear view of what else it may be.

Let me ask you a question........ WHAT?
I didn't know there was a right tree and a wrong tree. I only went up this tree because it looked pretty. lol
Yes, those DVD's would play and rip in the burner. My whole point was some DVD's will read/rip on a burner, but not a DVD rom. And I proved it in the case of my Liteon testing. I also, I think, proved what 321_Q/A has been saying.

Hi again ireland
Ya, I've ripped quite a few DVD's with that liteon, but these two movies were the only ones that the liteon didn't like ripping for some reason. The real proof maybe would be trying a Pioneer or some other DVD rom drive and see if the problem still exists. For now though I'll just use the burner to read those rare few.
