I bought retail DVD X Copy and used sucessfully thru 2 upgrades. Dounloaded XPRESS and copied a few disks. All install/read/write operations appeared to go fine but I cannot read on Memorex MVD2028/JVC XV-400BK/XV or the DVD X Copy program. There's material on the new disks but I'm not sure what. All hardware the same across both versions of software.I tried a second download to separate directory in another logical drive. Same result. Also did a file compare on the executable file-no diff.....
--Intel IV 1.9GHz
--Sony OEM version of the DRU-500A/X which
is RWDW-U10A(firmware 1.1)
--HP dvd+r blank disks
--Windows XP
--120GB HD
--512MB SDRAM
Would appreciate any thoughts as I like the way XPRESS does copy in 1 disk(theory for me so far}

daveg Hi,

Have you tried to play the discs on your computer? Results? ie PowerDVD,WinDVD,Win Media Player.

Have you checked Sonys website for the latest firmware for the 500ax?

You will also need to vist Microsofts home page and download SP1 to update your drivers. I don't see where you have it listed. If you do you should be OK.

What movies are to trying to burn?

I can see you're a techie. Problem with this is it's actually more art than tech. Doing a bit comparison doesn't mean squatta with regard to getting play compatilibiltity and being able to chill with some popcorn and a flick...

My advice to start out for player compatiblity with Xpress is install 2.0 and ditch 2.01. Go from there. Oh, and make sure the discs you buruend already will or won't play in your PC.

So if I understand, (which I'm not 100% sure I do) you tried DXCX V2.0 and V2.0.1?

If not, go back and get V2.0 from this link, and try the copy again.

The read issue should be much better in the next version. (V2.5.X)

We added a read buffer and now DXCX will automatically retry reads that fail.

I'll try to answer questions on 3 replys.
--I tried several movies including Ghost Ship and Epoch. Both would not copy with XPRESS 2.0 and 2.01. I then went into DVDXCOPY and movies copied fine.
--I have gone to Sony support and asked for a firmware upgrade to the OEM version of the 500 as the EXE firmware download for the 500 would not find the U10A version of this unit.
--I have tried to play back the XPRESS generated disks on computer software and I got an error message.
--I intend to pick up -R blank DVDs to try with Xpress.

daveg,
What did Sony say about the firmware/driver update? Did they have one for you?

I'll do a few searches and see if I can find any.

Do get those new disks and try one or two different movies to back-up other than the ones that you are seeing the problem with.

If it goes through, then try the problem movies.

That way you can pretty much narrow down if the program is not working at all, or if the problem may be on the media side of the issue.

Good luck man; Let us know how it goes!

BTW, do you have IAA (Intel Application Accelerator) installed?
If so try removing it, restarting and try it again.

If you donít, try installing it.

(I know itís a weird, but for the supported chipsets, it causes problems for some, and it fixes problems for others..)

daveg,

Here is the website for firmware 2.0f as you will find the hardware is the same for several of Sony's dual format machines.

http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru500axdwn.htm

Please follow the instructions for installation that Sony does provide.

While you are there click on the select product, you talk of U10A, U110A is there. The Sony 500a and Sony 500ax use the same firmware. The web-page I have given you should answer your software questions about the Sony drives.

Good Luck,

A new twist to it won't play on my regular dvd player. I have a sony 500ul dvd drive running at firmware 2.0f. Using dvd Xpress, the latest backups won't run on my home dvd player. It will run on my PCs dvd-player and on a portable dvd player. Not only won't it run, but I have to force the drive open with power off/on and remove it. fortuneately dvd xcopy on 2 disks works... but Treasure planet, the mummy and thelma and louise are all bust. Any Idea on what I can/should do?.. some movies have worked ok which is the real kicker. i used the same media for dvdxpress and dvdxcopy, so it isn't the media. hmmmmmmmm

I have the Sony 500ax and it came with firmware 2.0c. I've left the firmware as is and have had no problems whatsoever with DXC or DXCX. I have yet to make a coaster. Also, I have been using Leaddata DVD-r. Compusa has their brand on sale this week for a 10 pack in jewel cases for $9.99. I bought 5 packs of them and they also work to perfection with the 500ax. An employee at CompUSA has the same writer and he said that the CompUSA brand is all he uses and that they work great for him.

LeeL,
As nickicap was saying, you may want to go back to V2.0.

Others with Toshiba players have seen problems as well, and using V2.0 fixed the issue for most of them.

When you burn the disks in DXC, do you use Gear or Nero, and do you use the UDF Flag?

If so, then that may be the problem, because the burn engine that we use now does not yet support a straight UDF mode. (in theory, you shouldn't ever need the UDF flag, since it should be burning in a true DVD format, but in reality, some people needed to use it..)

Also, have you tried playing the disks in any other players?

LeeL,

Your best bet is to go back and try version 2.0 of DXCX for your Toshiba. When recording your DVD, please make sure all background programs are shutdown, and this includes any mic you may have on your system.

My experiences with DXCX

I regularly play DVDs backuped on 4 different playback devices - Pioneer DV-440 player, Thoshiba SD-1800, Sylvania DVD/VCR combo (can't remember model #), and an old Win ME laptop using WinDvd 2000 software. I usually only use DVD+R media with a Verbatim burner, although I also have a Sony DRU500a on another machine.

DVD+Rs I backup using DXCX 2.0 work on all 4 of the DVD devices with no problems all the time.

DVD+R backups using DXCX 2.01 always play on the Pioneer, permanently freeze at the 321 warning screen on the Thoshiba, pause at the 321 warning screen until I do a "stop>play" to continue on the Sylvania, and play on the laptop as long as I don't use the WinDvd software controls which then permanrntly freezes playback.

So needless to say, I use DXCX 2.0. Since DXCX 2.5 is still in Beta, I'll leave you all in suspense as to how that version plays back on these 4 devices...

Reply to questions
--Moderator Sont rep says that OEM version is NOT supported by the firmware upgrades. I went to EBAY and found OEM 500s(U10As) and asked seller how they are advertising the OEM as a 500A/500AX and all I got for a reply was referal to item description after I told them Sony did not support OEM upgrades. Not sure that'sd the problem, just 1 more variable. I removed all versions of XPRESS and downloaded latest version and used X-MEN DVD I bought and had copied with DVDXCOPY and still could not get DVD players to start a Read operation. Looked in the "LOG" and XPRESS thought all operations were complete thru burn.
--Haven't got the DVD-Rs yet but will try when received
Jaybo--Sont U110 is a different unit,,,see above
--Did not try the Intel accelerator yet, I need to find where it resides since I'm not sure it's on my system.
--Did a MS check on my system and I have all the latest drivers.
