Quickie comparison @ Digit: Samsung Blu-ray Toshiba HD-A1
Posted by Dan Bell on 25 June 2006 - 18:08 - Source: DigitMag
When I opened up the ads in the Sunday paper, I was barraged in every electronics store flyer, with the news that the Samsung Blu-ray player was available! In a couple instances, the $999 device was being offered with a - buy three $24.99 HD Blu-ray movies and get the fourth Blu-ray movie free. I think that this is a good sign, as it seems that the prices for these movies is dropping already. If memory serves, HD movies out just a few weeks back, were over 30 dollars a pop.
At any rate, what we want to know at this point, is how does this Blu-ray, first generation hardware, stack up against the first-gen Toshiba HD-DVD offering, the HD-A1. Over at DigitMag, they got hold of a Samsung already and they can give us some insight!
Design
The industrial design of the Samsung is far superior to that of the HD-A1 in several ways. The sleek, piano-black box has a tapered look; a circular, pressure-based front navigation panel; comfortable, lightweight remote control; and a 10-in-2 card slot reader for reading photos or MP3s. The player even resumes disc playback where you left off, whether you press stop, or you power the unit down -- a nice touch.
