Has anyone had success getting a backup to play on an Onkyo DV-CP500 player? Each backup I make plays the opening backup message fine, switches to the menu, then I get artifacts, and the player freezes.
I have tried DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD+R, and DVD+RW. I have used media by Fuji, Memorex, TDK, Sony, Pioneer, and some generic brand that just says "Digital Media", and get the same results with all.
The discs all play fine in my computer, and also in my Pioneer DV-F07, and Onkyo DV-M301, (which is actually a Pioneer DV-F727 player licensed to Onkyo.) But since the CP-500 and my TV are both progressive scan, I obviously would like to be able to view my backups at the highest quality.
I've also burned using an older model Pioneer A-03, and a new Sony DRU-500AX burner, all upgraded to the latest firmware.
The Onkyo DVD player is not listed on any of the compatibility lists.
Anyone have any thoughts on why the backups won't play or how to overcome the problem?

Forgot to mention that I have tried burning with the latest versions of both DVD X Copy, and DVD X Copy Xpress.
I have been using the Gear burn engine.

Maybe try nero as burn engine. If you don't got it can download demo from http://www.nero.com/en/index.html#root Try it without flag for udf checked and if that don't work try with udf checked. Try it on rw so no coasters are made.

Thanks for the sugestions. I tried the Nero burner, both with and without UDF. Unfortunately, there is no significant change in results.
Only difference was that the player didn't freeze with the DVD-RW disc, but it still skipped and had artifacts every 2-3 seconds. So strange since it never happens with an original movie.
Guess I'll have to sell this player and look for a progressive scan changer that's compatible.

If your going to look for new player I say make a backup with xpress to bring into shop to test for compatibility with. I remember Mr. Moore saying for us to look for vso engine to be in all 321 software and it is what xpress is using now. So the disk you make with xpress will be using it. Make sure the disk plays on the comp dvd then take it to shop.

I have that Onkyo DVD player and it plays all the burn formats in both DVD X Copy and Xpress. If the backups play on your computer then I would guess the problem is the media your using.I have a Toshiba 5002 burner and I only use the Ritek silver purple DVD-R media which is certified for the Toshiba, Onkyo, Sony, Pioneer and many others. It works very well and I have had no costers. The best deal I've found for it is at www.vinpower.net he also sells on E'Bay under vinpower,$115.00 for 100 plus shipping.I bought the Onyko about 4 months ago, and too took a backup disk of each burn format to the store to try it out, works flawless.Good luck!!

Well, I tried the Ritek, Optodisc, and Princo media. Still get the same results. I even tried playing the discs at a friend's home who has the same Onkyo DVD player, and they still will not play at all.
I'm gonna take Whompus' suggestion and try out the discs in the store before buying a new player. I just hope that I can find a progressive scan changer that is compatible. One issue is that it can't be a Pioneer or my other DVD players will respond whenever I use the remote.

I found an AWESOME changer to replace the Onkyo. It's a Panasonic model DVD-F85. I took DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW to the store, and it played ALL of them flawlessly, and with a great picture to boot!
It also plays CD-R/RW, Jpeg, WMA, MP3, something new called HighMat, and get this, it even has DVD-Audio decoding.
It's available in silver or black. Circuit City has the silver one for only $129.00! Unfortunately, they ran out of them just as I finshed my demo trials and wanted to buy it. They even had sold the other demo model. Their website, (Circuitcity.com), has a feature for them to notify you by email once they're back in stock.
If you're interested in this player, make sure you get the F-85, and NOT the F-65. They're both good players, but the F85 has a better chip in it for picture playback, and some other nice features. I posted the stats for it below. I can't wait to get one of these babies home.

Finally got the Panasonic DVD-F85. I was waiting for the black model to be released, but doesn't look like that's gonna be anytime soon, so I bought it in silver.
Gotta tell ya, this baby performs just like it did in the store. Although the manual says it doesn't play RW discs, I've tried it with -RW and +RW, and it played both flawlessly all the way through. Played those burned on both Xcopy, and Xpress. The picture, (progressive scan) is awesome, sound is great, and I love the convenience of a 5-disc changer.
So anyone looking for a great multi-format changer, (including playing JPeg, Mp3, CD-R/RW, WMA, DVD-RAM, DVD-Audio, and HighMat), this is the player you want!

DRipper,
The documentation says that it won't play the RW disks, but it is playing them?
That's pretty wild! That would be funny if they had a more expensive model that they say does play them, and doesn't..

I kept getting errors with my 2 year old Sony S360 dvd player(like not playing +r media), so I decided to see what else was out there. I did some research on cnet.com and found the Panasonic S-35 was rated very high for playing back all formats of Dvd media. I went to Ultimate Electronic armed with -r,+r, and +rw. It played everyone one of them flawlessly. Also, it plays mp3 and jpeg...$89.00 bones after a mail in rebate.

Yep, 321_Q/A,
The manual says it won't play RW, but it plays -/+RW's with no problem. Only shortcoming is that although it sounds good, it doesn't seem to have the quality of sound my other players have. But this is more than compensated for by the quality of the picture and the versatility of playing all formats.

I had a similar problem with my Onkyo.
Only it completely died when It read its first burned disk. It was a sweet Onkyo 6 disc 727 pro. Man I was maddd. Then I got the Panasonic F65 in black. Not ready to do the silver thing yet. And it did play the +RW's too. Cause I was gonna get the Sony baloney if it did not. Overall, Im happy with it. Just wish I had the other one too.
