In 2 of 5 DVD drives I own, backups start normal, and then hang (freeze) on the 321 backup warning statement. I have to stop the disc, then press play again to watch the movie.

Problem DVD drives:
Panasonic DMR-E20 (DVD-r[am]) recorder
Daewoo 5800 (cheapie drive)

Thanks for looking into this minor problem.

Usually when a dvd hangs or freezes, it is the dvd player's fault, not with the software. I have seen this problem numerous times, and without exception those who changed their player had their problems cease.

Many dvd players have a problem reading burned media becasue the reflectivity is different between a commercial disk and a backup. Newer lasers give you superior compatibility.

Dengar,

What does reflectivity have to do with it freezing on 321 warning statement. I author movie only DVD's with other software and it never sticks. Like DVDGuru I have had DVD's stick at the 321 warning... As you well know 321 manipulates the VOB's in order to insert the 321 warning... There could be a problem with the way the ifo's are being manipulated.

I do not know what reflectivity has to do with anything, but there was an article on this problem at dvdplusrw.org. The thesis basically stated that newer lasers have an easier time with the less reflective burned media vs. the more reflective commercially produced media.

I know that once I upgraded my dvd player all hang/freeze issues disappeard instantly, even with old backups that had given me fits.

My point is that it seems to me people bang their heads against the wall with some issues, when in my opinion, it is much easier to get a new player. We've all spent a lot of money on a dvd burner, DXC, blank media and movies, so what is the big deal about another $70 on a new settop?

I know of no one who had any hang/freeze issues who continued to have them after they upgraded their settop.

Case in point, DVDguru, he only has the problem in TWO of his FIVE drives. That suggests to me that it is an issue with the player, not with the software.

This is just my humble, uneducated opinion, and I was simply trying to offer an alternative explanation and solution to a problem that many seem to have. A problem that I no longer had once I bought a new settop.

sticks on me also, never had this problem before xpress upgrade 2.01., froze on my 5 month old toshiba. i can not afford new equiptment every time i upgrade my software. ihave a 4 year old panasonic that worked ok with 2.0.1 , if my backups won't play on both players then i know something went wrong. burned about 125 movies so far.

thanks jim,

I think the 321 backup warning statement wants tweaking coz all my equipment is brand new.
even got rid of my old ao4 burner for a ao5
and my sony dvd player and my pannasonic E50 is brand new so it is not the equipment its the software..

It must be specific to different players, because some hang, while others play flawlesly in different players. That was a good point, and maybe not be a bug at all in the software. That warning statement is needed for legal stuff and so on - i have no problems with that.

As long as the backup plays, thats A-OK by me, just one more step that must be done.

My 2 cents worth. The bottom line is that DVD creation software packages allow you to create short custom titlesets like this when creating home DVDs and these DVDs play on basically every player out there (I'm talking about software like WinDVD Creator, various Pinnacle packages, etc.) without hanging. The warning screen that DVDXCopy adds messes up on MANY more players than these package's creations do. Aren't these just short custom titlesets displaying a single graphic for a short period of time in all cases? I'd say that they are and that puts the burden of the problem in 321's hands, not any given player.

Its definatley a software problem. I was using smart ripper / dvd split / nero to do my backups and have never had a disk that would not play on my DVD player. With DXC ive not had a single disk that would either not play or not go further than the DXC screen. Even using nero for the burn made no difference, anyone for a drinks mat??

I am always up for drinks m8, even at 7:00am MDT. I understand why you say that its a software problem, but I just think something else is going on. I have backed up 87 movies ith DXC and 24 with DXCX, and I have only had two issues.

1. After DXC 1.4.1. I lost Nero combatibility, but I won't go back because 1.5.2. works so much better for me. I have yet to find an episodic 1.5.2. won't backup.

2. I couldn't get some of my children's scratched disks to rip. I got the dreaded "disc read error".

Other than that there have been no problems. I have backed up 111 movies that play flawlessly on my PS2, my PC, two Sony dvds, a Phillips, a Panasonic, a Dell and a Sager laptop, and an Apex.

Just wanted to add my .02: My burned discs won't play on the DVD system in my new Honda Odyssey. I bought DVD X Copy Xpress principally to keep copies in the car in case they get scratched, stolen, or melted. Instead, they hand to the 321 "DVD Backup" screen and no amount of fiddling gets them to play. I believe its a software issue that 321 should address. Needless to say, it doesn't make sense to replace the DVD player in the car.

I thought I would add what I have been finding with this freeze up at the 321 splash screen as it might help.

This is only with Xpress and not Xcopy.

I have found that if the option for movie screen type is set at "Widescreen" and you are backing-up a "Full screen"only movie, depending on the player you get this freeze. If you change the setting to the movie type you are backing-up, full screen movie to full screen setting or vise a versa, no lock-up.

Again, this is using Express only and only on some players. I think that when a different screen size option is selected than what is on the actual disc, the player fumbles and locks when it is trying to look for a file or instruction that doesn't exist.

Anyone finding this out too?

Ack!.. halt, cease & desist.

No posts on the removal of, or pointers/requests how to find, the 321 warning please.

Seriously! It will not be tolerated in this forum. I would appreciate it if folks would point this out if they see others post, or PM a Mod to remove it.

Thanks
Floyd :o/
