Somebody please help with a solution. I have a dedicated system for DVDXCopy only. I'm running XP Pro with NO other software installed but DVDXCopy 1.5. No cable modem, no anti-virus, no zone alarm. The burner I'm using is the Sony DRU-500A on the master IDE channel (operating system & DVDXCopy on a scsi drive). In external enclosures that convert IDE devices to USB 2.0 I have a Pioneer DVD-106 DVD-ROM and a Pioneer DVR-105 DVD Burner. Please don't ask dummy here why I have two burners. When ever I put one of my movies in the DVD-106 DVD-ROM and a blank in the Sony DRU-500A burner and open DVDXCopy, it finds the movie just fine in drive Q which is the DVD-ROM but as soon as I select "Copy" I get an error window about a "Read Error", please select Abort-Retry-Ignore. I can't even get out of this selecting any options. I must open Task Manager and kill DVDXCopy. If I then take the original movie out of the DVD-106 DVD-ROM and put in the DVR-105 Burner and open DVDXCopy, select "Copy" everything is PERFECT. I get a beautiful burn of the movie from the Pioneer Burner to the Sony Burner. Is this a hardware problem with the brand new DVD-106 DVD-Rom or a software problem. I don't have any DVD player (ie. PowerDVD or WinDVD) installed at all, just DVDXCopy. Do I need to install some read software for the Pioneer DVD-ROM to even read the movie into DVDXCopy? Any clues would be greatly appreciated before I take the DVD-ROM back where I bought it, and end up with egg on my face!

I have three solutions for you.
1) Clean your drive. Just because it is a brand new drive does not mean the laser is clean.
2) You should definately install a dvd player (I like powerdvd). Before you open DXC play the movie for a couple of minutes in you dvd player. This procedure has resolved disc read errors for me.
3) Also make sure the original dvd is clean. Most of my disc read errors are due to dirty dvd's.
Anyway, those are my suggestions. Good luck.

The machine sounds pretty awesome, sounds like you have the same hobby as I do (Thank god I build machines for other folks to pay for it all!).
Go into the device manager and make sure that you have no warnings on any of your USB devices or controllers.
But I do have to say that the only time that I did have problems were when I didn’t have a DVD player installed. If this is the case, DXC should offer some type of DVD player with the package. There are some free ones out there that are pretty cool. But since I installed one, I have had no problem backing up my collection. In which I have to bring up a good point, I am almost done backing up my collection! By the time Express or Platinum come out I will already have my collection backed up. This will force me to go out and by more DVD's to fulfill my new habbit. This is getting to be a very expensive hobby. To me the Movie Industry may be losing a little bit of money. But for every one else that is included in this process are making out like Bandits! Now that I look at it, if The Movie Industry shuts down DXC, then wouldn’t it be hurting an awful lot of Businesses that rely the backing up of DVD's? If the courts see the Movie Industry as being a monster over all these different types of businesses that have sprung up, it might help the case a little bit.
Sorry for rambling on, I was just in one of those moods.....

dengar: Thank you very much for the info. What I did so far was shutdown the dedicated system for DVDXCopy. Started my normal Linux/NT/W2000/XP system which is full of everything. I cleaned the new DVD-106 DVD-ROM, checked the movie DVD and played the movie fine in WinDVD Recorder/Platinum. It plays just fine (ran for 10 minutes test only). So I think your statement that I need a "Player" installed will solve the problem. It's too late tonight,(too many Beefeaters/rocks) but in the morning I will install "PowerDVD XP", which came with the Sony burner in the dedicated machine and try again. Thanks again, and will post back if this solves the problem.

I have a PIII system that doesnt need a DVD player program to run DXC. I dont think they have anything to do with it.

Some guys have trouble getting DXC to "see" their ripper. You don't have this problem. But the solution for these guys is to play the movie in a player software for a minute, then open DXC and the ripper, with the movie in it, gets recognized. I've seen several such posts over a 4 month period.
Best regards

OK: The latest. I installed the Power DVD XP from Sony in the dedicated machine and played the movie for three minutes. (It wouldn't play at all without this program). I then left the movie in the DVD-ROM and opened DVDXCopy and the READ was perfect! Thanks for everyones help!
