I get an error messege "error reading source disc" while trying to back up Eyes Wide Shut, Blade, Dracula, all Austin Power movies etc. I am using DXC 1.4.1. the discs are not scratch at all, I have tried the washing with soap and warm water suggestion from other posts, but have not succeded in backing up any manufactured DVDs. I have been able to back up home made DVDs which I have made using Nero Vision, WinTV2K, Pinacle's Bungie, and Dazzel's DVD 200. The software appears to be working to a certain extent.

When I tried to back up (i.e.) Blade, DXC looked for the movie in the DVD drive and arranged disc 1 and disc 2 with no problems, than I press the copy icon and the "preparing disc 1" window appears, it reads the first file with in 10 seconds, than moves to the next VOB file and gives the "error reading source disc" and I get the option to "abort" "retry" or "ignore"...
If I "abort" it moves to the next VOB and again comes up with "error reading source disc"...
If I "retry" it immediatelly gives the error again...
If I "ignore" it continues the task and estimates the current file process to be completed in approx. 1h 35min. Since there are 5 other VOBs for it to process for disc1 I assume that means it would take aprox. 7.5 hours to finish.
In addition, while DXC says it is preparing the disc, I do not hear or see any indication from my DVD ROM that it is spinning or that there is any activity going on, unlike when it read the first file, the drive reved up and the green LED in the front of the drive turned on.

I forgot to mentioned, I was succesful backing up 2 X-rated DVDs from VIVID Video onto DVD-RW discs flawlessly.
I am running DXC 1.4.1 in the following machine:
HP 9795c 1.4 GHz P4
128MB RDRAM
2 80 Gig Maxtor HDs
Pioneer 115 DVD-ROM
Pioneer 104 DVD-R/RW
I am using DVDPro -R and -RW media.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Kilo, have you tried reading the discs in your burner instead of your DVD-ROM drive?

TLH2, yes, I have tried to go through the process from both drives and I get the same results, in fact, it hangs up in the same spot every time using either drive...

update...
I found the solution to my problem! My PC's registry was corrupted. It must had happend during an improper windows shutdown (the PC locks up every once in a while and a hard shutdown is necessary)and scan disc was not enough to fix the problem.
I noticed I did not record mode options in my WinTV2K video card, I could see video with it but could not record, it would error out. Also, my WinDVD application would error out when I tried to launch it.
I scanned disc and defragged the drives, and it wasn't until I launched the registry checker and corrected the errors it found that DXC started working properly.
As a result of fixing registry errors, when I restarted the system, DXC came up as being "NOT" registered and it asked for ID and password again.
After registration I was sort of abled to back up Blade. I say sort of because it did not make a good back up. I put the back up disc 1 in my nice $500 Sony DVP-CX860D mega changer and it hasn't been able to read another disc since...
disc 1 played fine all the way to a few seconds before the "insert disc 2" would have been displayed. the vidoe started freezing up than suddenly I got a blue screen and the changer began cycling through the other discs and saying it can not read them...

KILO ,
That's really weird!
I have never seen a disk cause a home machine to stop responding..

Do you have virus protection on your PC?

yes I do. I use Norton, I also use ZoneAlarm Pro for a fire wall since I have broadband, and I always stop all internet activity when I do any burning. The weird thing is the way that the registry error hardly manifested itself. It most had been like that for a week or more and i did not notice. The software seems to work although I will not back up anything else until I figure out what happened to the Sony DVD player. I have little doubts that the bad back up disc was the cause, I think it got throuwn out of calibration. I found a website that talks about how to cal Sony DVD players. My player model number was not in the list of players they were discussing, but I bet it works in a similar way. the website I'm talking about is http://members.accessus.net/~090/awh/sonydvd.html
