Has anyone tried either of these DVD-R brands? If so, did you have luck with them? I am usually sketchy about buying unknown brands, but the prices may cause me to change my ways...

It really depends on your equipment. I've used the OptoDisc on my system, and it works. Doesn't mean it will work on yours. If you're interested in cheap -R discs, I'd suggest taking a look at Meritline. They have a 12 disc sampler that is 2 of each of a bunch of cheapo brands for $20. Find what works for you before you invest big money in a large spindle of coasters. As one example, their house brand, Meritline, worked fine for their 1x disc, but the 2x disc didn't work for me.

optodisc also worked here. My toshiba dvd players don't like the burned copies but I think this is because of the way they are burning the dvd movie copy

I use Optodiscs. I haven't found anything else, cheaply, that won't cause periodic U11 loads on Panasonic's DMR-E20 when inserted. My only problem with them is the Optodiscs' blue label surface. It's coated with something that prevents most markers from leaving a solid mark on it. I've only found a certain Maxell brand of CD/DVD marker that writes on it, and then only if pressed lightly.
I have 5 different DVD drives, and Optodiscs performed well. For reads and writes, I have the aforementioned E20 and a Panasonic LF-D311S DVD-R/RAM PC drive. The only problems I've had is with the E20, as it's a pretty poor player drive. 50% of discs copied 1:1 or created with Nero on the LF drive won't read on the E20, but, will read on the other 4 units. Sometimes, discs the E20 ITSELF creates it won't read but the other 4 will.
The other 3 readers are an HP DVD200I DVD+R/RW PC drive, a Philips DVD/VHS combo unit, and a Playstation 2. Actually, I've had the chance to use them on two different PS2 models. Board 1, the original release, and Board 7, the latest, with an Apple II mod chip. The discs play fine on all these units. The modded PS2, though, does require some "tricks" with reboots and holding in the power button, though, but, it will read it after getting around the loading sequences.
midas mentioned Meritline. I used to get my products from them, but, I recommend Shop4Tech now. Meritline, many times, sent me something else other than what I ordered Something similiar, but, sometimes, similiar isn't compatible. Plus, trying to reach someone with help on an order or a refund was never returned. I got my LF drive from them, and, it didn't come with any of the extras it was said it have. Also, since they were reselling the drive, Panasonic/Matsushita says they won't offer support on it. Meritline must. And, I don't find myself getting much support from Meritline.
With all that said, however, I haven't gotten an Optodisc to write correctly with DVDXCopy yet. But, I've not gotten ANY disc that will read on anything other than PC DVD player software. Once the DVD+RW failed, I tried one DVD-R just to see. When that failed, I decided I'm waiting and trying only DVD+RW since the Philips will read them. IF the next version release (Maybe tonight.) works on DVD+RW, I'll try a DVD-R, of course, to see. If it doesn't, well, I admit I'll probably ask for a refund. 3 versions and all it does is create PC playable backups, which I already could do with Nero.
