Tha187um,

How do you know that Verbatim media is manufactured by Ricoh. I see no marking on my Verbatims to support this. Also I saw a post at fatwallet that Verbatims are manufactured by Ritek. Additionally, if TDK, Verbatim, Memorex, and Philips are all manufactured by Ricoh, why would Sony only list Verbatim's (and NOT the others) as supported DVD+R media on their DRU-510A?

Confused and curious.

GTurner, I know Nero had a built in utility on the CD-DVD Speed tool, but on version 6 I couldn't get it :( so here, I found another tool for you...

Its called DVD Plus Identifier 2.1

http://66.118.166.100/console/cd/dvd_plus_identifier21.zip

This the info I get back from a memorex media, by the way, I was refering to all those brands on the +R 4x category, it might be different on a lower speed and on the -R versions, so all I can say that all I said is true to the 4x +R media...
try it and please post what you find, by the way, I have Sony as well and I've tried so many different brans in both + and - so you DO NOT have to stick to what they say, its just a recommendation so when you have a problem and you call tech support, the first thing they will ask you is, what brand of media are you using? when you say something besides what they recommend, they will tell you, its not compatible with that media :) lol I love tech support, they make me laugh :)

Tha187um,

Thanks; cool program. The Verbatim disc in the gray bottom spindle produced the following results (same as yours). I'll try a the Verbatim in the black bottom spindle next.

Tha187um,

I am furious! The reason I thought to check a disc from each spindle is because I noticed poorer results with the so-called "Verbatims" in the black bottomed spindle. I burned all 15 from the gray bottomed spindle with perfect results. However, the first few from the black bottomed spindle exhibited pixelation and a couple of coasters out of the first 6 discs. These discs produced the following results using DVD Plus Identifier. Note the manufacturer is MCC. Who the heck is MCC? Since I received two spindles of each using the Office Depot special a couple of weeks ago, I'm taking the black ones back tomorrow and trading for gray (Note all four of my OD spindles were DVD+R as the local OD store was kind enough to trade the two -R spindles for +R). I should point out that there is no difference in appearance between the MCC & Ricoh discs.

Ah, the dreaded MCC, we meet again I see, I've been lucky enough to have never dealt with this in the past, thanks for the identifiers tip, I've never seen a black bottom spindle from Memorex, but if I do, I know to stay away from them.

MCC - Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation
Funny because its a great company with a strong name, but here in the dvdxcopy forum is well hated by many and other forums as well. I came accross some forums that praise the company, they talk about how they are the most compatible media out there, might be true, just not for the sony drives :)

MCC (that I know of) is the only company for now producing the 8x DVD media.

I wish manufacturers (in this case, the branding companies) would label their products so that their customers know exactly what they are getting.

Good luck and Im glad I was able to help.

Interesting; as it turns out MCC is actually supported by Sony (per their web site). Nonetheless, my experience has soured on them; I'm returning the unopened spindle of MCCs tomorrow and trading for the Ricohs.

Well, it might be supported and it might work great for data storage and not for video, remember all of us here are using General Purpose media, WHICH is good for video, but not MADE for video... I've seen media that says purpose: Video Recording and are very very pricy.

Went to Office Depot today and traded my "Verbatim" MCC (black bottom) for "Verbatim" Ricohs (gray bottom). Used the utility Tha187um put me onto and confirnmed the new gray bottom Verbatims were, as expected, Ricoh.

I also had some TDK +R 4x media that I'd had good luck with. Tested these and, to no surprise, they are also Ricoh (same output from the 'identifier' utility as the Verbatim Ricohs).

FYI (repeat from one of my previous posts); I use the Sony DRU-510A, rev 1.0c firmware.

I used two TDK DVD+RW discs and they worked great. Since then I've tried 3 Imation DVD+R disks and they've all failed. When I put them in my DVD player I get the message 'Check Disc'.

Apparently Imation doesn't work well for me and my I/O magic internal DVD+RW drive.

Has anyone else had this experience? I would buy more TDK's but they're really expensive and I'm looking for something that is reliable but more inexpensive.

do you get the burn complete message after the burn just like when you use an rw?

do they play on the computer ?

have you ever played any other brand of +r on your set top player? it may be a +rw only player?

All, Hi!

i am just reporting on the media i have successfully used with 321 products.

i have Great success with +R: Fuji 2.4x(high polish silver-tops Black writing),and matted silver tops, TDK 4x, Memorex 4x.

these are all produced by Ricoh(Japan) incidentally!
the 4x are rev 2 and the 2.4x is rev 1.

i have also had Good( only because i have use about 20 total) success with verbatim -R.

and these are produced by CMC.

Also needs mentioning that i have used 4x media but cant/wont burn at that speed, firmware 1.1c for my oem(DW-U10A) sony burner wont allow it.

one happy to help dad

get ready for this:

According to DigiTimes article, it seems likely that Taiwanese optical media manufacturers will start mass production of 8x DVD-R and DVD+R blank media in next month.

Major DVDR drive manufacturers have announced their 8x writers during the last couple of weeks, but lack of suitable media for such drives is currently the major obstacle for the next step in drive speeds. According to Taiwanese manufacturers, such as Ritek, they have postponed bigger volume manufacturing of 8x discs because their local drive manufacturers haven't been able to release 8x drives yet.

8x discs will cost appx. between $1.30 and $1.50 per disc, compared to a price bracket of $1.00-$1.20 for 4x discs. For those of you, who aren't aware of the DVDR writing speeds, with 4x it takes appx. 15mins to burn one DVD±R disc (of 4.38GB).

To add to security's commend, MCC is also mass producing the 8x media :) good luck :) hehe.. ok, I have this to add, yes, a 4x will take about 15 minutes, but an 8x will take about 10 (as posted on all sites with info on them) so unless you will buy a drive for the first time, or upgrading from your 1x maybe 2x drive, its not worth it upgrading from a 4x drive... Just like cd writers, have you noticed how on a 24x its about 5 minutes to write to a disc? but on a 52x they advertise (writes to a full disc in under 4 minutes) shouldn't it be more like 2 minutes? :) well thats besides the point, remember 321 doesn't even recommends 1x burning, at max, 2x or 2.4 for the + drives... a big no no on 4x and no imagine on 8x :) its a big no no no no :) ... well, we have derailed enough on the topic :) its all gturner's fault :) lets all get busy and look up some specials.!

Ok, for those memorex fans, this is pretty cheap considering it comes with a jewel case and good for those not wanting to buy too many.

security,

Of the 25 Optodisk, there were 8 that were not flawed and they burned just fine. Having 17 out of 25 flawed with interior spots soured me on Optodisk however. I have not had a chance to see who made them yet.
